Background
editWiki Loves Monuments in South Africa has received great interest from various stakeholders and is an excellent opportunity to promote Wikipedia and at the same time ensure that important heritage sites are documented for future generations.
Goal
editThe aim of this project is to encourage and facilitate the capturing and upload of photographs of South African heritage sites or monuments under free licensing during the heritage month. In addition we want to encourage those who upload to write about their monument of choice in Wikipedia of their local language choice. A secondary objective is to increase the quality of photographs submitted and increase the number of participants.
Plan
editStrategy & Activities
editThe Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 competition will run throughout the month of September which is also Heritage month in South Africa.
During this time, participants will upload and categorise photographs of South African heritage sites. This participation will build up to upload marathons on heritage day. This will be a national project to be held and executed in six of the nine South African provinces.
During the month of September we will organise several 'Wiki Loves (name of town)' events to encourage people to contribute to Commons.
The award ceremony will be held in Cape Town ("the Mother City") in November 2015. Prizes will be handed to the best provincial pictures submitted and the national winners. We will also use the event to thank our jury, and our government and corporate partners and sponsors.
Prize Category | Value in Vouchers (ZAR) | Value in Vouchers (USD) |
---|---|---|
First Prize | 10 000.00 | USD |
Second Prize | 6 500.00 | USD |
Third Prize | 4 000.00 | USD |
Best Proposed Monument | 4 000.00 | USD |
2nd Best Proposed Monument | 1 500.00 | USD |
Heritage Western Cape will support the competition for a further two years (2014 being the first year) and is very keen to promote the competition throughout the Western Cape.
All prizes are given in the form on photographic vouchers from ORMS, one of our partner organisations and one of the best photographic suppliers in Africa.

Fit with strategy
editThis project meets a number of mission targets for Wikimedia strategic plan (through 2015). They are outlined below:
Increasing reach
editIncreasing Wikimedia's reach in the Global South is one of the salient points of Vision 2015. South Africa is crucial to this objective, as a key African hub. This competition received a fair amount of attention in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Kimberley. There are a number of heritage enthusiasts looking forward to it.
We have secured funding from Heritage Western Cape to promote participation from entrants in the Western Cape. This includes a prize for photographs from entrants in this region.
Participation
editThe potential of this project to increase participation is daunting. This year we are aiming at about 120 new users who will participate and upload. This in itself will be a great increase in the South African editor pool. Extensive focus will be put into creating lasting contacts with those who attend our upload marathon days. We also want to attract more contributors of the afr.wikipedia
Quality
editWikimedia Commons still has a very poor representation of South African heritage sites and monuments. The available images are of moderate to acceptable quality. This project aims to improve the coverage of the South African monuments by encouraging people (including professional photographers) to take and donate quality images under free licenses to the Wikimedia Commons database. Increased coverage outside main stream cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg are also targeted.
Credibility
editBy roping in local authorities, heritage societies and educational institutions as partners we will be able (to a great extent) to improve our credibility as a chapter and movement in handling such important issues as national heritage, and in running large scale public events in the country.
Measures of success
editWe will consider this project a success if we can:
- Increase the quality of photographs submitted in comparison to entries from the 2014 event.
- Increase the number of participants submitting photographs in comparison to the number of entrants from the 2014 event.
- Increase the diversity of pictures of monuments taken so that a larger total number of monuments in South Africa have a picture.
- Secondary metric of success: achieve 5 000 or more uploaded photographs of South African heritage sites during the month of September 2015. This objective is secondary to the above two. So if fewer than 5 000 photographs are submitted but over 80 people competed and the quality of the top twenty photographs has increased then it will be a success.
