Indic Wikisource proofread-a-thon

edit

CIS-A2K conducted 2nd all India level online Indic Wikisource Proofreadthon in November 2020 on Wikisource to enhance the skills, awareness, and encourage to works on Wikisource of Indian language Wikisource contributors. This was fifteen days of Online Proofreadthon in November 2020, where the participants contested among their language-specific an all-India basis.

We have 12 Indic language base Wikisource but all communities don't have any experience with the online Proofreadthon and never organized such things. So CIS-A2K conducted the all India level online Proofreadthon to support the community to grow the same level to others. But every language community has a different quality standard as per their policies. Most of the community are at infant level compare to others in respect to proofreading ( MOS of layout and check the error of OCR output). So this online edit-thon has helped the community to compare with other qualities and rectify to set the proper Wikisource standard.

November 2020 Proofreadthon

From the past May 2020 edit-thon experience, we announced the new format for this session. One, we have increased to 10 winners from each community because not encourage between the interlanguage community rat-race. Two, set the minimum threshold point at 350 to get any prize. Each community selected the books to be Proofread by the 280 participants. Total of 372 books proofread in this edition/contest. A total of 50771 pages and 27566 pages were proofread and validated respectively. Below is the statistics graph of the contest. In this contest total of 12, Indic Wikisource communities participated out of 12.

Impact:
We organized two Wikisource edit-thon in the year lockdown 2020. Both are very much contributed by the Indic Wikisource community. This was a completely online program that generated significant contributions to create their native language resource. First time, they realised their strength and weakness, what need to do, what was the drawback.

Learning:

  1. There is only one tool, still in developing stage contest tools called indic-wscontest. and another wscontest tool not working properly. So it is so difficult to show and compare the running stats and progress of each community.
  2. Before November 2020 edit-thon, The IndicTechTeam developed/improvised a good contest tool that is workable for the contest. But still there some issue we are facing.
    1. The stats are not updated spontaneously or in real-time mode ( as other Wikipedia contest tools like [fountain] works), because Wikisource data schema is different from Wikipedia.
  3. Co-ordination between 12 language communities is too complex in nature. Every community has unique issues regarding each section, like the selection of book, reviewer action, quality maintain.
  4. To maintain the quality control of Wikisource was a major concern during the contest time.

Coordinating with NDLI to execute the MoU.

edit

CIS-A2K representatives participated in two meetings with National Digital Library of India (NDLI) to formulate a possible collaboration with the organization. During these meetings, the terms of the collaboration were finalized, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was drafted, operational framework and action plan for the next two academic years were discussed.

NDLI is a central government project under the Ministry of Human Resource Development that aims to collect and collate metadata and provide a full-text index from several national and international digital libraries, as well as other relevant sources. It also functions as a digital repository of textbooks, articles, videos, audiobooks, lectures, simulations, etc. The huge resource, it contains, can be useful to enrich Wikimedia projects in various ways. Also, integrating Wikisource and Wikidata contents into NDLI websites will bring more visibility and attention to the projects. The meetings were organized by NDLI and held at IIT Kharagpur on 9 September 2019 and IIT New Delhi on 8 December 2019.

CIS-A2K had the first formal meeting with Professor Partha Pratim Das, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Kharagpur and Joint Principal Investigator, NDLI, Prof. Plaban Kumar Bhowmick, Assistant Professor, Centre for Educational Technology, IIT Kharagpur and Co-Principal Investigator, NDLI and Mr. Nanda Gopal Chattopadhyay, Chief Technical Officer, NDLI at IIT Kharagpur on 9 September 2019 and a future plan for possible collaboration was discussed regarding the integration of Wikisource and Wikidata contents into NDLI website, using NDLI contents in Wikimedia projects, outreach, etc. It was decided to include Wikimedia Foundation as one of the three parties to sign the MoU and after the meeting, the three parties worked on drafting the MoU. A second meeting happened at IIT Delhi on 8 December 2019, where apart from NDLI and CIS-A2K, WMF representatives participated to discuss further the future action plans and finalize the MoU. The final implementation did NDLI website here in 2021, January. They have published a few books in English and Bengali. We will publish other Wikisource books when the respective community will be ready.

Impact
This is the first time, CIS-A2K team collaborated with a central government project. This was a good achievement for us to implement Wikisource book to National Digital Library of India (NDLI).

Learning

  • As it is a central government project, and we have to co-ordinate with central universities like Kharagpur IIT's people, no bureaucracy faced during the period of the meeting.

Follow-up
As the MoU has been finalized, it is now in the process of being signed by the representatives of the three parties. After, we organized the webinar about modes of engagement of Wiki Communities with NDLI , where 20 participants present on 1st December 2020. We are co-ordinating till now with NDLI.

Indic Wikisource Helpdesk

edit

Indic Wikisource Helpdesk have been formed to help Indic Wikisource users. We have different helping/discussion channels on different platforms like Facebook, Messenger, Telegram, whats-apps, etc. But we realized that we should have a centralized platform for discussing/helping about Indic Wikisource. That's we have created Indic Wikisource Helpdesk in January 2019. CIS-A2K also set up dedicated discussion Indic Wikisource Helpdesk for Indic Wikisource communities for discussing Wikisource-related topics as a place to get quick help. CIS-A2K has resolved/discussed 3 issues in last year from July 2020 to June 2021.

Learning
People are still more comfortable asking for help in many chat/messenger than posting their queries at Indic Wikisource Helpdesk. So we have not archived all those discussions as open platforms. There is also someone to one help session that happens last six months.

Impact
This central helpdesk reduced the FAQ in all social media chat groups.

Follow-up
Indic Wikisource Helpdesk, regularly follow up, answered, and closed.

Impact
