- Wikiconcours Lycéen
- Coordinator training
s part of the Wikiconcours Lycéen, a training session took place for 20 coordinators from CLEMI, with whom we are partners for this action. The coordinators are academic project leaders from all over France, who are responsible for applying CLEMI’s national policy. As far as the competition is concerned, they are the representatives of the national CLEMI (based in Paris) and a support for the teachers in the participating schools. Based on this context and the evident need to raise awareness and train people to contribute to Wikipedia, we organized a full day’s training for this target group. An employee and a volunteer from the association trained 20 people at the CLEMI headquarters in Paris.
- Creation of a help and resources page
In order to be able to provide a substantial set of resources and documents for the teachers involved in the Wikiconcours Lycéen, volunteers from the association have enriched the current project page on Wikipedia dedicated to the competition, including a help and discussion platform. The platform was presented at the training session for CLEMI coordinators and contains resource documents, a discussion forum and frequently asked questions.
- Training for doctoral students
Training sessions for doctoral students attached to the Doctoral School in Lille took place on 20 and 27 February. The two 3-hour sessions were part of a global partnership: "developing your knowledge with Wikipedia". The partnership comprises two 3-hour training sessions for doctoral students then a free contribution time that the doctoral students organize at home for a period of 3 months. At the end of the 3 months, the contributions are evaluated then submitted to the University authorities for, marking. The two training sessions involved an association employee and a member from the Lille region.
- Raising awareness among upper secondary pupils
5 Wikimedians from Toulouse spent a day in a secondary school in Toulouse to present Wikipedia to Year 11 pupils and teachers. The morning was given over to a presentation of the association, the Wikimedia projects and how Wikipedia can be used in class, while the afternoon was organized around a contribution workshop. 17 pupils took part in the workshop on a voluntary basis and the Wikimedians present were able to help them set up their accounts and write their first contributions.

- Wikipedia readership survey
The first contact between the researchers and the association took place in October 2014. The period from January to March 2015 was mainly used to consolidate and finalize the survey questionnaire. The draft questionnaire was submitted to a few association members then finalized. Following discussions with the researchers, it was decided to set up a project page. This was used to create a discussion forum around the survey on Wikipedia without indicating a link. The banner was inserted on the French-language Wikipedia for 1 month (26 February to 26 March). The researchers were expecting over 15,000 reader responses.

- Women of Science Edit-a-thon
The 3rd Women of Science Edit-a-thon was a real success. The event, which aims to highlight Women of Science in the Wikipedia encyclopaedia, was held on 7 March. Approximately 40 people, mostly women, met for a day to contribute in the “Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie” library. 8 association volunteers attended to train and assist the contributors during the day. 17 articles were improved and 1 article was translated from English.

On 7 and 8 January, following contact with the Science and Society Alliance (a group involved in popular education) we ran a stand at a colloquium based on the themes of popular education and research. The show did not attract many visitors (most came for the lectures) but provided an opportunity to talk with researchers about Wikipedia and popular education. Like many expert groups, they know little about the Wikimedia projects and contribution training sessions may well be envisaged with the partner.

- Wikimedia France takes part in the first Public Domain Festival
The 1st Public Domain Festival is an extension of “Public Domain Day”, which was initiated by the European Communia network and organized in France since 2010 by Wikimedia France, Creative Commons France, Open Knowledge Foundation France, the SavoirCom1 list and “La Quadrature du Net”. The festival is the initiative of Alexis Kauffmann and Véronique Boukali, trained teachers and respective founders of Framasoft and Romaine Lubrique. Wikimedia France gave strong support to the initiative (cf. Priority 5 for further details) and particularly to the content enrichment actions. No less than 3 Edit-a-thons, 4 book scanner demonstration sessions, two photo outings and various awareness sessions took place, including at the Musée du Barreau de Paris, Père Lachaise cemetery, the Carrousel du Louvre (127 photos of Maillol’s statues) and the Louise Michel library, to celebrate the new entrants into the public domain.

Meetings
- Scoping meeting at the Lille Natural History Museum
10 museum staff welcomed Wikimedia France for a scoping meeting following various discussions between Florent Lamiot (contact for the local Lille group) and the museum director. The aim of the meeting was to clearly present the outlines of a potential partnership and define the actions that may be envisaged between the local group and the museum. It led to the drawing-up of a partnership agreement that has to be approved by the municipal council in April.

Workshops
- Visit to the Brittany Museum in Rennes and workshop
On 20 January, a guided tour of the museum on the theme of prehistory was attended by Wikimedians from the local group, members of the Men ha Houarn archaeological association, which popularizes prehistory, museum employees and other interested parties. This was followed by an “Introduction to Wikipedia” workshop on the theme of prehistory, which was used to import a large number of photos on to Commons in the “Brittany Museum” category. The action was also an opportunity to make contact with INRAP (The National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research). INRAP is responsible for carrying out preventive archaeology operations (evaluation operations and digs). It is also responsible for the scientific exploitation of preventive archaeology operations and for disseminating their results.
Edit-a-thon
- “Ethnology will surprise you” Edit-a-thon at the Musée du Quai Branly
Following an initial edit-a-thon at the Musée du Quai Branly in May 2013 based on the ethnographic themes covered by the museum, it was decided to organize a second edit-a-thon to attract people for a longer period than a traditional contribution workshop. The museum organized a two-day event on 14 and 15 March entitled “Ethnology will surprise you”, with a full programme of talks, colloquiums, readings, etc. Over 5,000 people came to the event. 8 association volunteers took turns to attend over the two days and were able to direct curious visitors towards the Wikimedia projects and give them some training.

Training
- National Naval Museum
Wikimedia France was contacted by the National Naval Museum to define the outlines of a partnership in which the museum staff will be heavily involved. The opportunities for action discussed were to add to the article on the National Naval Museum (the historic and collections sections are incomplete), to create articles or improve existing ones concerning the other entities elsewhere in France and to create or improve articles linked to the museum’s directors where they have played a major role that is valid from an encyclopaedic point of view. The uploading of iconographic content on to Wikimedia Commons is also envisaged, particularly from the museum and library collections (e.g. Etienne Sigaut’s manuscripts on China), and certain books may even be highlighted with Wikisource. An initial Wikipedia contribution training session was held in early February for 6 museum employees, soon followed by a training session in how to use Wikimedia Commons.

- The University of Rennes 1 scientific collections
The University of Rennes 1 zoology collections are kept on different sites on the 540 m² campus and are made up of approximately 150,000 animals preserved using various techniques: stuffed vertebrates, skeletons, specimens in liquid and a large number of invertebrates. Following the signature of an agreement with the University of Rennes 1, the Rennes Wikimedians have completed a number of photo sessions this quarter and uploaded nearly 40 animal photos on to Commons.

- Photo coverage of the "Sculptures souabes" exhibition at the National Museum of the Middle Ages (Cluny)

Garitan - CC-BY-SA 4.0 The Cluny museum welcomed 4 Wikimedians from the Photo, Paris and GLAM groups to the press viewing of its new exhibition, "Sculptures Souabes", for a photo session followed by a discussion with the exhibition organizer: this is a real sign of recognition on the part of the museum, which has been a partner to Wikimedia France since 2012, as places were counted. 66 photos were added to Wikimedia Commons.

In Brest, the theme of urban art attracted nearly fifty enthusiasts and contributors for a walk dedicated to tags and graffiti. - Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon
We were contacted in February by the Galeries Lafayette Foundation, which was looking to organize a version of the Art+Feminism edit-a-thon in France for the first time. A practical guide to organizing an edit-a-thon was designed and made available to them to help them focus on the potential risks inherent to this type of event. The edit-a-thon took place in the Marais district in central Paris, in the temporary space used by the Foundation, which is due to open in 2016. This relatively unusual venue (due to its corridor shape – long but not very wide) housed the event for two days – 10am to 2am on the first day and 10am to 6pm on the second. Prior to the event, 25 contemporary art professionals were trained by an association member. These 25 people were present on D-Day and were able to support the volunteers in training and helping participants. Over a hundred visitors attended the event and approximately half of them contributed. Fifty articles were created and improved over the two days; this created a real spirit of emulation between the participants, some of whom came back the next day.

- First workshop at the French Centre for Immaterial Cultural Heritage
In Vitré, the La Souris qui-Partage association and the French Centre for Immaterial Cultural Heritage joined forces for a first workshop dedicated to learning about and contributing to the free Wikipedia encyclopaedia, and led by an association member. The centre made its resources available – mainly from the archives of the “Maison des Cultures du Monde” – so that the Wikipedia articles concerning items registered on the UNESCO lists of Immaterial Cultural Heritage could be created or enriched. The workshop was organized with the support of the local Rennes group.
- Learning about Wikipedia in a Grenoble library
A workshop was organized in a library and based on three key themes: learning how to structure articles on Wikipedia (history, checklist, discussion page or http://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/wikiblame.php), learning to reference an article correctly (know the authority sources: French National library, Library of Congress, or add a source with the visual editor: website, book) and “hide-and-seek workshop”, which consists of using local library sources to identify “well-known” articles still to be written or subjects to be developed. This activity time was followed by a session of writing preliminary outlines of missing articles.

After a particularly successful Crowdfunding exercise, we were duty-bound to show that we were just as capable of launching and running the WikiCheese project. We had also agreed to organize a contribution evening per month. We have now achieved this aim: the first three sessions took place this quarter, in which we photographed forty cheeses and added to or created the corresponding Wikipedia pages.

- Sport
Although winter is a low season for sports photography, a number of competitions were covered and a total of 3865 photographs produced. Two contributors in particular were very active: one covered several events in Belfort using photo equipment loaned by the association (a badminton tournament on 3 January, wrestling on 31 January and indoor football on 28 February), while the other was given micro-funding to cover his travel expenses for cycle races in northern France and Belgium and covered eight races during the quarter. In Paris, a contributor covered the friendly match between Mali and Ghana. We also handed over a report to ASO concerning the actions carried out under our partnership in 2014.

The CLEMI coordinator training was effective and ran smoothly as there were such high expectations. They had never been trained, despite the fact that the competition is in its 3rd year. A lot of questions were asked during the day. So far, almost no teacher questions have been fed through to the association’s employee team, which suggests that the training and the help and resources page have given real support to the teachers.
- Training at the Doctoral School in Lille
The 20 doctoral students who were given 6 hours’ training were all motivated and ready to learn the skills required to contribute to Wikipedia. We felt a real spirit of emulation during these two half-days. All the students did research into topics and articles to create and/or modify during the free contribution period, which helped to make the second training session much easier.

- Women of Science Edit-a-thon
We received a lot of positive feedback from volunteers who took part in the day. The main reasons were the profile of the contributors – mostly women, all motivated to learn how to contribute and keen to enrich the encyclopaedia – and the excellent preparatory work done by the librarians prior to the day. A real spirit of emulation was felt as time passed, with a desire to achieve some effective contribution by the end of the day. L'Oréal has contacted Wikimedia Spain with a view to repeating the initiative: an edit-a-thon will be held in April in the Biblioteca de la Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid.
- Wikipedia readership survey
The questionnaire preparation brought together a number of association members to discuss which questions should be modified. The questionnaire, which was also published online, was therefore the result of discussions between researchers, but also between members of the Wikimedia movement. Over 16,000 responses had been collected by the end of March. In the medium term, the survey should add to a report on the state of digital Francophonie under the auspices of the “Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie”.

- An “Ethnology will surprise you” edit-a-thon at the Musée du Quai Branly
This edit-a-thon enabled us to come up with potential improvements for holding future edit-a-thons (see lessons learned for the next quarter). In return for the participation of volunteers in this edit-a-thon, the Musée du Quai Branly provided us with fifteen invitations for the temporary and permanent exhibitions, as outlined in the compensatory clauses of the financial agreement.
- Participation in the preview to the "Sculptures souabes" exhibition "
This event was an excellent opportunity to reward the commitment of association members by giving them a special reception at the press preview. We are looking to develop this type of compensation and "exceptional" event with the various partners. The edit-a-thon will help us to develop other actions with this institution in the future

- Art + Feminism Edit-a-thon
Several positive points emerged from this event. Firstly, the partner’s ability to mobilize. The communication for the event was effective, particularly on the social networks, which gave the event visibility among a novice audience that had little awareness of the Wikimedia projects. Concerning the event itself, the volunteers appreciated the logistics (caterer, overall organization, programme...), which meant that the contributions with the people present were effective. The event was a success overall and most of the volunteers are keen to repeat it in one form or another. We have therefore begun discussions with the partner for a future event.

This project and the resulting evenings seem to offer only advantages. Firstly, the evenings are real contribution times, with 325 photos uploaded. Secondly, they’re convivial occasions at which Wikimedians can meet, talk to guests about their work (press, crowdfunding donors, institutional partners, etc.), or teach new contributors. Finally, the evenings have attracted journalists from all over the world and incidentally offered excellent media cover for the project itself and, more generally, for Wikimedia France..

Sport continues to be a good example of Wikimedia France’s support for photographers, showing how contributors can benefit from the loan of equipment and help in obtaining accreditations and micro-funding.
What didn’t work?

We are still waiting for, the signature of the agreement with the partner (CLEMI). We have been waiting for this signature for several months now, which is raising questions among the community of teachers involved in the project, and some are hesitating about being involved next year. This is mainly due to the fact that our partner is now attached to a new branch of a ministry. Some teachers may interpret it as being the fact that the ministry does not see the Wikiconcours Lycéen as a priority.
- Wikipedia Workshop at the Lycée Stephane Hessel in Toulouse
The volunteers who attended had a few problems, mainly linked to logistics. First of all, the Internet connection (Wi-Fi) in the room was faulty and the people who were there were unable to contribute for long periods. Secondly, the event was hosted by a school, and the school’s IP was blocked for a period due to vandalism. A Wikipedia administrator intervened to resolve the situation.

Various aspects of the edit-a-thon could have been improved, such as the training time of approximately 10 minutes, which could not be altered. It was not enough to teach the participants all the basic theoretical grounding, and they later sent questions by email to the organizers. We place great emphasis on the various ways of seeking online help on French-language Wikipedia so as not to ask too much of the supervising volunteers. In addition, one of the participants in the edit-a-thon launched into a debate about Wikipedia’s eligibility criteria. As time went by, several volunteers and participants became involved and this cut down the day’s contribution time.
- Participation in Open Access week
This action was deprioritized so that the association could target its energy and resources elsewhere over three very busy months. The action has not been rescheduled for next year.

Despite taking place in a well-known museum in Paris and despite wide-ranging communication (posters, website, social networks...) this edit-a-thon attracted only a very small number of participants, less than 10 over the two days, while 6 volunteers had travelled to supervise the participants. Three contribution training sessions were organized during the day and we noted that the mid-afternoon session attracted more people.
- Monitoring long-term partnerships
Some partnerships are making little progress in terms of practical action due to a lack of time given over to coordinating the partners or quite simply a lack of time on the partner’s side. It is difficult to assess just how available and reactive a partner structure can be, and some of the actions that have been initiated are still on hold.
What lessons can we learn for the following quarters

At the next Wikiconcours Lycéen in 2015 - 2016, we will be organizing a scoping meeting prior to the event to discuss the agreement and the rules of the game and to draw up a clear, precise reverse schedule to which the parties are committed.
- Wikipedia Workshop at the Lycée Stephane Hessel in Toulouse
For future workshops, we will make sure that the partner has a good Wi-Fi connection. We are planning to possibly invest in Wi-Fi repeaters to amplify the existing network.

- Women of Science Edit-a-thon
At the next edit-a-thon scheduled for October 2015, we will use some of the training time to give an extensive presentation of the online help systems (proof-reading of the draft, sponsorship).
- GLAM
- Coordinating the partner network
The structures that canvass Wikimedia France may need a lot of time to develop their project internally. To maintain the link with the association, we are trying to keep the partners going in the meantime. For example, a convivial WikiCheese evening is planned with the current partners for the next quarter, including the GLAM. Other options are to ask the partners with whom we are working to share their experience with us at conferences, forums or dedicated contexts.

We will no longer organize two edit-a-thons on the same day in order to have as many volunteers as possible at an event to supervise the participants. We have drawn up a practical guide to organizing an edit-a-thon, which will be routinely sent to partners prior to such an event.

The format of convivial evenings dedicated to a contribution theme should be studied and reproduced wherever possible. A wide range of subjects, particularly in the regions, could give rise to this type of meeting and funding.
