WikiTuesday Meetings

edit

Since December 2019 WMTR has been organizing biweekly meetings on Tuesday nights. That’s where information on the activities of the group is shared, and discussed, the new ones are suggested and sometimes planned. Those meetings are mostly attended by active contributors of Wikimedia projects in Türkiye but are open to anyone who would like to meet wikimedians and ask questions about Wikimedia projects. WikiTuesday meetings are mostly held online, but some meetings are held face-to-face in Istanbul mostly.

Detailed meeting notes of every meeting are shared with all community here: Notes

Wikipedia Education Program

edit

WMTR carries out many activities at educational institutions of different levels in Türkiye, mostly at universities. In total, the program is organized at approximately 15-20 partner institutions in different cities during each school year. The type of activities include but are not limited to below.

Wikipedia Assignments

edit

The most common activity is visiting a graduate or undergraduate course in any department ranging from architecture to law, tourism management to political relations, and making a presentation about the basic principles of Wikipedia editing and different ways of contributing. Students are then given assignments to contribute to Wikipedia.

After visiting the class, group members follow the contributions of the students until the end of the school term; answer their questions; and sometimes make a second or third visit to the course or make online Q&A sessions.

Volunteering Courses

edit

In recent years, many universities in Türkiye included “volunteering courses” in their curriculum and WMTR has been making presentations about digital volunteering and Wikimedia projects for all students taking those courses offered by its education partners. Experienced Wikipedians help those students who would like to develop a volunteering project based on their Wikimedia contributions to discover the different aspects of Wikimedia projects better.

General Presentations

edit

Upon the demand of the education partners, 1-hour in-person or online training about Wikimedia projects for the students of the partner; or a presentation given to faculty/department teachers/instructors about Wikimedia projects and how to use them in education are given.

Extracurricular activities

edit

The group members meet with the students of particular high school and secondary schools to answer their questions when they make small contributions to Wikimedia projects under the guidance of their teachers as an extracurricular activity.

Wiki Student Clubs

edit

WMTR supports the university students in Türkiye founding Wiki Student Clubs and organizing Wikimedia activities to encourage their schoolmates to contribute Wikimedia projects. The students are also encouraged to co-organize joint activities with Student Clubs of other universities.

WikiCamp

edit

WMTR aims at bringing wikimedians and wikimedians-to-be at 2-3-day camps where participants could focus on editing, discussing, and learning about different aspects of Wikimedia projects and be inspired by each other. The first WikiCamp was organized in 2024 in Arhavi, a lovely small town of Türkiye close to the Georgian border, and brought the members Wiki Student Clubs in Türkiye and with students from Georgia.

Hosting Wikimedia events

edit

Believing that Türkiye is an excellent meeting point for Wikimedians around the world; since 2022 the WMTR team has been trying its best to host fellow Wikimedians from around the world at Wikimedia events in the country with famous Turkish hospitality. Wikidata Trainings For Turkic Wikimedians 2022, Turkic Wikimedia Conference 2023; and Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2024 are the important Wikimedia events held in Istanbul.

Wiki Edit-a-thons

edit

WMTR aims at filling the knowledge gaps, bringing knowledge of people from different backgrounds to Wikimedia projects by organizing edit-a-thons in collaboration with several civil society partners. We call them "Vikimaraton" in Turkish. The group holds Wiki Edit-a-thons on a wide range of topics from Climate change to elections, from migration to hamam culture.

Closing the gender gap

edit

Along with other knowledge gaps; the group particularly focuses on the gender gap problem in Turkish Wikipedia and other Turkish Wikimedia projects. The group has organized Art&Feminisim events since 2016. In addition, volunteers organize Kırmızılı Kadınlar (Women-in-Red) edit-a-thon series during the year and  Wiki Gap events at Sweden diplomatic missions in Istanbul and Ankara are also organized.

Local editing and photography contests

edit

The group plays an active part in organizing those contests: Wiki Loves Earth, CEE Spring, Wikipedia Asian Month...

Producing educational materials in Turkish

edit

WMTR members dissemineate knowledge about Wikimedia projects by producing videos, presentations, handbooks in Turkish. Some example are: Vikipedi 101 videos, Vikipedi 201 videos, Handbook of Editing Musem Articles at TRWP
