Transl-a-thon helps you find Wikidata items that needs to be translated. It is a collaborative tool focused on translating wikidata items into different languages, enriching the knowledge base and making it accessible to a wider audience.

Basic functionality

Transl-a-thon is intended for use by Wiki users and non-wiki users. It is meant to help wiki and non wiki-users translate wikidata items.It is intended for use by Wikidata contributors and translators. It is meant to help translate and localize Wikidata items, including labels, descriptions, and aliases, to improve multilingual accessibility.

Transl-a-thon uses Wikidata’s translation tools and community-driven workflows to facilitate multilingual content expansion. It takes existing wikidata items from the database and allows users to translate their labels, description and aliases. This translations are then reviewed and validated by the community to maintain quality and standardization.

What Transl-a-thon does not do ?

Transl-a-thon does not automatically translate content or support text-to-speech translation. While it lacks built-in machine translation capabilities, it can integrate with external translation APIs. However, it does not have the necessary functionality for converting text into speech.

Prerequisites

Before using this tool, you should be familiar with:

  • the basics of Wikidata including its structure and data model, how to use TranslateWiki and Wikidata’s built-in translation interface
  • software, programming languages

You should have:

  • A registered Wikidata account with the necessary permissions to edit translations.
  • A compatible web browser and stable internet access to interact with the platform
  • A good understanding of language pair you are translating between.
  • Awareness of Wikidata’s translation guidelines and best practices to maintain translation accuracy.

  1. Prior to the event, establish a common language and style guide.
