editStrengthening existing community
editWikiTungi Program
editWikiTungi is a city-based Wikipedia community management program where it provides Wikipedians a platform in the city meet, share and learn. The current Tungi program is based out of two cities, Puri and Bhubaneswar. The community members have helped in removing the barrier of follow-up events in those cities and also help in mark the presence of the movement.
Like previous years, the A2K program has continued its support towards the WikiTungi program. This year the Puri WikiTungi marked its 2nd anniversary. Started in December 2015, the Puri WikiTungi has around 10 active volunteers contributing to different Wikimedia projects. In their journey, they have organized 10 WikiTungi meetups, mini MWT and TTT, Wikipedia 15th anniversary celebration, Rathayatra GLAM, Wikidata-thons, Image-a-thons and other activities. The A2K program has helped the community members in the ideation and execution for some activities and programs.
- Bhubaneswar Heritage Edit-a-thon
Bhubaneswar the Temple city of India is not well represented on cyberspace, while many state governments and government institutions are supporting Open data projects, thinking of the Smart City project, the A2K program forged a partnership with the Bhubaneswar Development Authority. Bhubaneswar heritage edit-a-thon is an online edit-a-thon aimed to improve and create articles on the heritage monuments of the Indian city Bhubaneswar. In this edit-a-thon around 26 Wikipedians from 12 different Wikipedia projects participated and created around 192 articles. The edit-a-thon was a pre-event program for the QRPedia activity, after analysing the outcome edit-a-thon, the A2K and the Bhubaneswar WikiTungi will help BDA in installing QR codes in the heritage monuments of the city. This activity will help to turn Bhubaneswar into a QRpedia city. Instaling QR Codes in the city will help the city more tourist friendly and will also promote the awareness about the Wikimedia Movement.
- Collaboration with Asian Athletics Championships 2017
While many Wikimedian works on various topics, often topics like sports are not Collaboration with Asian Athletics Championships is considered as one of the biggest content collaboration in the Odia Wikimedia projects. After the edit-a-thon, that happened on 30th July 2017, the Asian Athletics Championships website was released under CC-BY-4.0 website, which allowed the community members to upload the images of the championship into Wikimedia Commons. The social media outreach of this collaboration helped in adding almost all the images from the website to Wikimedia Commons, around 300+ images were added of which 63.2% images are used in different Wikimedia articles. Total 115 Wikipedia articles got their first image. Also, two members of the community were given the pass by the organization to attend the Opening Ceremony of the event. A2K member Saileshpat and Jnanaranjan Sahu attended the Opening ceremony, around 100 images were clicked during the event of which 50 are added to Commons.
- Wikidata Workshop
A capacity building program was planned by the Wikimedia Foundation to train community members about the basic of Wikidata and how they can contribute to it. As a part of the India tour, a two-day long event was planned in Bhubaneswar. While the Bhubaneswar WikiTungi members lead the event, the CIS-A2K helped the members in organizing the Wikidata workshop at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar.
- The overall impact of Puri WikiTungi on Odia Wikipedia
An entire new community was formed in the Indian city of Puri after an introductory workshop in 2015. In 2017 the community turned 2, CIS-A2K has been regularly in touch with the community members and is also supporting community members in different areas. The impact of the community towards Odia Wikipedia can be determined from the dashboard comparison in two years.
Outreach
editGovernment of Odisha Collaboration
editOn September 2017, the Government of Odisha, an Eastern India state adopted a policy to promote transparency and access to Knowledge. Governments are huge producers of original content and data, releasing its content under Creative Commons license allow projects like Wikipedia and others to use the content created by the government. This collaboration made the Government of Odisha as the first government in India to adopt Creative Commons license in its social media accounts. The collaboration was a follow-up of Asian athletics championships and was made possible because of Odia Wikipedians, Wikimedia Foundation, and CIS-A2K. The government of Odisha is still continuing its collaboration and releasing contents of some major departments under Creative Commons license. This collaboration has helped to illustrate around 13 articles.
Cultivating new editors
editInstitutional Partnerships
editIn the current workplan period, the A2K program tried to revive its old Wikipedia Education Program. As a first step, the A2K program organised a ground visit and needs assessment with the previously engaged teachers and authorities of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. The plan was organised in collaboration with the Wikipedia Education Program team of the Wikimedia Foundation and the CIS-A2K. The program was organised for two days to identify the gaps and failure of the previous program. On the first day, around 20 students and 10 teachers attended the basic Wikipedia orientation program on Wikipedia and about Wikipedia Education Program. During the second half of day-1, two hours long needs assessment conversation happened with the teacher to understand the current situation of the teachers and institution in reviving the WEP. A2K has proposed teachers and other authorities to share their curriculums and academic calendars and also to organise a digital learning workshop for the University staffs.
Learnings
edit- Digitisation project in Parija library, Utkal University
The digitisation process in the Parija library of Utkal University has stalled due to the change in administrative roles in the University. Around 50 books from Prachi publication and other copyright-free books were identified for digitisation. The project in-charge (User:Chinmayee Mishra) and CIS-A2K is trying our best to recontinue the program.
- Workshops
In this quarter no workshops have been done, As majority of the community stay in the Eastern Part of Odisha, organising workshop in other part fails due to non-availability of local community members for follow-up work. A2K has also identified that majority of individuals taking part in the workshops have very less knowledge of Odia typing skills. That's why A2K has avoided one-time activity in the current quarter and has focused on institutional partnerships.
- WikiTungi
The regular meetup of the Puri WikiTungi continued till one and a half year, then the community was scattered due to their personal and professional commitments. A2K is planning to do more outreach programs with the help of the existing community in Puri and grow the community back to its strength.
Future Goals
edit- Utkal Dibahsa Edit-a-thon: A state-level edit-a-thon is planned in the month of April to organise in different colleges or schools of Odisha during the Utkal Dibasha or state formation day.
- Sambad 100 Women Edit-a-thon: The second iteration of Sambad's 100 Women edit-a-thon is planned during the month of March to follow-up the previous work and continue the collaboration with the media organisation.
- CV Raman College workshop: A multi-lingual workshop is planned by the Wikipedians of Puri in the month of February.
- Content relicensing process: The A2K program will follow up with the State Government of Odisha for the content relicensing process, provide support and assistance to the community members in doing it.
- QR Codes installation: As the Bhubaneswar Heritage Edit-a-thon has ended, A2K will follow up with the Bhubaneswar Development Authority for the installation of QRCodes in the heritage monuments of Bhubaneswar.
