Wikidata's birthday cake

What?
Punjabi Wikimedians are active on Wikipedia and Wikisource. Apart from these two Wikimedia projects, Wikidata has its own value. To engage Punjabi community members with Wikidata, CIS-A2K celebrated Wikidata's 7th birthday.
When and where?
The event was organised on 3 November 2019 at Patiala.
How?
This celebration was a monthly meetup of the community members as well. 9 people have participated in this celebration and meetup. Apart from the celebration, some of the topics which were discussed during this meetup were:
After a brief introduction, tasks were assigned to participants to contribute on Wikidata. Participants contributed via Tabernacle tool and they have some added labels in Punjabi and Hindi language.

A good tool improves the way you work. There are many tools for Wikidata. It seems fun to edit Wikidata by using these tools. Tabernacle is one of them I have learned today. I am imagining that it would be fun to edit Wikisource also by using tools like this.

Satpal Dandiwal and Satdeep Gill shared their experience of WikidataCon2019 happened in Berlin. They brought laptops from Asaf (WMF) for Benipal hardarshan and Stalinjeet Brar which were given to them under Hardware donation program. Participants also discussed the upcoming activities of the Punjabi community.

Learning

edit
  • It is beneficial for new members to start from translating labels rather than to start from teaching them the Wikidata query.

Follow-up

edit
  • CIS-A2K will conduct one event before June 2020 related to Wikidata.
  • CIS-A2K will start WikiProject Punjab on Wikidata before June 2020.

What and Why
CIS-A2K conducts and supports conducting regional and city Wiki-meetups. Wiki-meetups help to resolve disputes in face to face interactions. They are placed for Wikimedians to discuss ideas, activities, collaborations and future plans. CIS-A2K tries to build a bonding between community members by conducting meetups.

How
In the last 6 months, CIS-A2K conducted 1 online meeting and supported 2 Punjabi community meetups in Punjab, India.

The online meetup was conducted in the month of July 2019 on Google Hangouts. 7 members participated. 6 of them were male and 1 was female. The detailed discussion can be seen here. Photowalk in Patiala

edit

This image of Samania Gate was awarded the 9th prize in the national contest of India in Wiki Loves Monuments 20

Sunami Gate

What?
Images are an important part of Wikipedia articles. There are articles on Wikipedia which don't have images but images can describe those articles in a better way. To fill this gap, CIS-A2K conducted a Photowalk for Punjabi Wikimedians as part of Wiki Loves Monuments in India 2019.
When and Where?
The Photowalk was conducted in Patiala city on 15 September 2019.
How?
4 members have participated in this Photowalk and they had basic knowledge about photography and the importance of Wikimedia Commons. A list of the monuments was prepared before the day of Photowalk and the route was planned accordingly. There are state-protected monuments in Patiala city and they don't have media files on Wikimedia projects and even on the other websites. There are 10 historical gates in Patiala and only 4 of them are under state-protected monuments. Participants started this Photowalk by visiting Sirhindi Gate. The next destinations were Samania Gate, Darshni Gate, and Sunami Gate. So, all 4 gates of state-protected monuments were captured. Qila Mubarak was under construction at that time and Sheesh Mahal was also closed on that day. So, these two monuments were not captured. Photos were uploaded after the day of Photowalk and a photo of Samania Gate by Satdeep Gill won the 9th price in Wiki Loves Monuments in India 2019.

Learning

edit
  • Government is working on to renovate old monuments and their maintainers are making some changes in the original design also. So, it is necessary to document other monuments as early as possible. Otherwise, they can lose their originality. [HELP ME TO ADD PROPER NARRATION]

Follow-up

edit
  • CIS-A2K will conduct one event to add these files or other photos of Punjab to related Wikipedia articles, before June 2020. It is needed because there is data about Punjab that exists on Commons but not added to Wikipedia articles.

Content Enrichment - Scanning work [TEMPORARY HEADING]

edit

We have found the first Punjabi book of this type. It is mentioned in this work that "there is no copyright of this book."

What?
CIS-A2K in collaboration with Punjabi Wikimedians initiated a content enrichment program and started scanning or uploading rare books from different sources. Very few books are available on the web under the free licenses/public domain. So, the initiative was started to build up Punjabi Wikisource.
When and How?
27 books have been uploaded between the period of June and December 2019. These books can be seen in this category. This work has been done by using Scansnap SV600 scanner and post-processing was done by using Scan Tailor or ABBYY FineReader. These books were uploaded on Wikimedia Commons and all are licensed properly. A total of 6,398 pages have been uploaded. These books were uploaded with book template on Wikimedia Commons and index pages were also created on Punjabi Wikisource.
