Basic information

status

Indicates the current status of the proposal using one of the following options:

project

This is the human-readable name of the Wikimedia Foundation project, such as Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikijunior, Wikimedia Commons, etc.

language

This is the human-readable name of the language the prop os l covers, such as English If the proposal is for multiple (or all) languages,

pid

The proposal identifier is the letter or number that uniquely identifies the proposal in discussions or during voting. Traditionally, the first proposal is lettered A, the second is By .

vid

The version identifier is useful in discussions and voting. Sometimes proposals change significantly during the approval project, and older comments may not relate to the newer version.

popularity

During informal discussion and voting periods, this helps track the general popularity of the proposal. After discussions and polls close, this indicates the final consensus reached,

Some polls are concerned with keeping, removing, or deleting, and these additional options may be useful in those situations

pop-amt

These thermometers indicate the current trend. Is there growing consensus toward support? Then poplar should indicate partial or support and pop-amt should indicate increase. If things are holding steady, that is indicated with static

description

This is a very brief summary of the proposal. It should be as short as possible to uniquely identify the proposal and must be 30 words or less.

contributors

This is the place where the key contributors should be listed. In many cases, 20% of the people actively involved in a proposal do 80% of the work. Those are the people who should be credited here. There should be an acknowledgments section on the main proposal page for a complete listing of people who participated.

General requirements

req-original-work

It is required that all proposed logos be original work of one or more people involved in the proposal. Basing a logo on another work, even a free piece of clip art or something you found on Wikimedia Commons will generally disqualify a proposal. For example, using a graphic that was licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) as the basis for a new logo is not acceptable, since the new logo must then be licensed identically and may therefore be used by anyone. For legal reasons, the Wikimedia Foundation must have the copyrights of proposed logos transferred exclusively to it in order to use it as a logo.

The only exception allowed involves reviving a previous logo proposal that was not selected and modifying it to work on a new project. This is acceptable because the copyrights of all proposed logos belong to the Wikimedia Foundation, and it is acceptable to rework old logo ideas. It is usually better to rework the old logo in a new way. Remember, it was not well enough liked before to be selected, so try to improve upon it a bit.

req-non-derivative

Just as a logo cannot be based off of someone else's work, it is required that proposed logos cannot be based on other Wikimedia Foundation logos already in use. The Foundation wants each logo to uniquely identify the project. It does not want a bunch of cloned logos that look very similar to each other and blur together in the minds of visitors. When someone looks at the proposed logo, they should think, "Project name!" (fill in the actual project name there), not "Ho hum. Another Wikimedia site."

That being said, highly creative use of common themes and elements of current logos, especially if two projects are closely related, can help to give a subtle connectedness in the minds of visitors. It is required, however, that such similarity cannot be reasonably expected to cause confusion in the minds of the visitors looking at the logos.

req-not-gfdl

Proposed logos are exclusively for use the Wikimedia Foundation, thus the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) is not acceptable license for proposed logos, and it must explicitly be denied since generally all contributions to Foundation sites are considered to be released under the GFDL.

If a logo is uploaded indicating that it was released under the GFDL, the proposed logo should be deleted by the original author/uploader (use {{Delete}}) as soon as the mistake is discovered. Then, the author should upload a new version of the logo that uses the {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} template to assign the copyrights to the Foundation (see the next attribute for more details).

req-copyright-wmf

As explained above, for legal reasons, the Wikimedia Foundation required the copyrights of proposed logos be transferred exclusively to it in order to use it as a logo. The simplest way to do that is by adding the {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} template to the image description at the time the image is uploaded. If the image is already on a Wikimedia server, and if you have the legal right to do so, and if the proposed logo does not explicitly state it is licensed under a different license (such as GFDL, Creative Commons, etc.), then you may edit the image description and add the {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} template.

If a logo has been uploaded indicating that it was released under the GFDL or another license, it should be deleted by the original author/uploader (use {{Delete}}) as soon as the mistake is discovered. After the deletion is complete, the author should upload a new version of the logo that uses the {{CopyrightByWikimedia}} template to assign the copyrights to the Foundation at the time of the upload. Note that if the image has been on the server for a while under a free license, it may not be feasible to try to convert it, and the proposal may die.

After deletion, a new version of the proposed logo should be uploaded. Since licenses such as the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) and the Creative Commons licenses cannot be rescinded or revoked after they have been applied to something, a different file should be uploaded instead of uploading the original file for a second time. Look upon this as an opportunity to make an improvement or change to the file that you probably would not have done otherwise. Thus the proposal will actually be better as a result of the extra work.
