Better?
editI drew largely upon this version of strategywiki's main page. I'm not particularly in love with the images used on the sandbox page as of its current version. Discussion points:
- Are the pictures/thumbs okay? One seems to be broken being that small.
- Did I remove too much content? If so, what is missing? If it is found that a lot of info is missing I think we should add another floating box on the right side underneath the current one, to eliminate some whitespace.
Other comments, questions, suggestions? Killiondude 03:05, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
- In general I love it. I wonder if is a better way to describe request for Permissions to clarify that it is where to go for removal etc as well (and maybe even clarify that it isn't for requesting sysop on the larger wikis but that may be a lost cause). The other thing is other languages. Not sure where you want to put that? It may still be easy to use if it was under a hat perhaps, kinda like the new Fundraising main page is. - We really shouldn't be putting too much content on this page describing all of the pages, except when necessary to show the difference between similar pages, so I agree with Killion's removal of quite a bit of the content. I'm definitely against putting languages under a hut... Meta is supposed to be the multilingual hub, we should not be hiding the languages box. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 20:57, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Comments: Just a few.
- Change the text in the top part from dark grey to black, consider making it slightly larger.
- Change the background of the box to a lighter shade of the green used in the word "Metawiki" at the top, with the links matching the blue shade in the same word if possible.
- Is there a reason why FoundationWiki isn't there in the list at the bottom? We have a fair number of redirects from this project to that one, particularly for staff lists, board-approved policies, board minutes, etc.
- Agree with Jamesofur about the Permissions section, suggest that wording be changed to "(to request granting or removal of sysop, bureaucrat, oversight and checkuser permissions on Wikimedia wikis, subject to local wiki rules)
- Like the layout and organization.
Hope this is helpful. Risker 03:45, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
- I've changed the background of the box to a lighter shade of the green used by "meta" (the latter of which is the same color as the Wikimedia logo). I've also changed the links to the same blue in the logo and "wiki" but I don't think the change is noticeable. I think your wording is good, so I updated the stewards link to what you posted. I've also added foundationwiki (note that I am still using Template:Sisterprojects, and so those errors were there before I started making this sandbox :)). Killiondude 05:00, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I liked almost all of your changes, and then someone else came through and bulldozed a lot of them. ;-) The overlap of the box on top of the divider is really annoying to the eye, and I'd really like to see that gone; it looks like an unintended positioning error as it stands right now. Alternately, align the top of the box with the *top* of the divider. The expanses of white without any significant colour are a bit much too, and make the page look drab. Would you consider some kind of colour as a background for, say, all but the links to other projects? Risker 04:28, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
Random style comments
editGenerically, I like the idea of change. I'm noticing a specific shift away from the RGB colour-set with the introduction of the grey/orange iconographs. (don't have an opinion, just that it stood out for me. There's a somewhat ubuntu feel, probably due to the colour introductions and the layout format.
Specifics:
- Sister project slogans (already raised, and addressed. THANK YOU!)
- The info-box-like inclusion in the first section:
- background colour jars; does not fit any colour set.
- likely to grow? does it work in all browsers without expanding the section? in either case, kill it as a section inclusion.
- reload.png? looks like a button to reload the section.

- I've changed some of the icons and the background of the floating box to get a better color set going here. I also noticed that there was a lot of orange going on, but I couldn't find some good replacements from Commons. Ideally, I would like to find better icons for the floating box. Like I said above, I'm not particularly attached to any of the images used right now. I implemented File:Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics icon (blue).svg, but there's also File:Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics icon (dark green).svg. I think the blue might match better, but I like them both equally. Killiondude 05:00, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
Committee to Save the Goings-on/Notifications Box
editConcerned citizens of the metaverse, now is the time to stand up for the Goings-on/Notifications Box and all that it represents in terms of having at least one dynamic element on the new Main Page. Saving the Goings-on/Notifications Box will show to the wide world (and well, mostly to ourselves) that our community is not dead yet! For other reasoning, see Talk:Main Page#Redesign submission.--Pharos 22:06, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Really Like
editI really, really like this! Especially the smart use of the red box on the right - it just looks clean and simply feels right.
Of course I have two comments:
- I think that the thick dark line around the two content areas (main section and the languages section at the bottom) is too dark and overpowers the design. I'd suggest changing to a really light grey, maybe, or even getting rid of it all together (I'm not so much a fan of the tendency that wiki pages have to head to the "box in a box in a box in a box" system). Alternatively, if you really want to distinguish between content areas, you could just pick a light neutral color and just apply that as a background.
- I'd go with a single color for "Meta-Wiki" at the top - probably a dark grey (since you do a really good job of take the Red/Blue/Green and sending it through the rest of the design, it doesn't really need to be over emphasized, I think).
