Global blocks

Hi! I mentioned you in another discussion already. As you are a global sysop and whatnot, I would like you to look into the global block policy. I think that the global blocks should not be hard as a matter-of-fact because they may affect so many registered users who cannot even complain about the block anywhere as they have been blocked in every project. --Pxos (talk) 12:38, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

I agree what you wrote on Ajraddatz' talk page. It's never a good idea to block also registered users from editing. Those blocks affects on many users. Yes, I'm a global sysop, but only Stewards can block globally. So this way I have nothing to do with global blocks. For what I know of the case, In my opinion it's not needed to block registered users, only IP's. Today we got a one request to unblock user via fi-wiki mailing list, and yesterday one user told to unblock at fi-wiki IRC channel. --Stryn (talk) 12:53, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Yeah. The person who wrote on the mailing list said: "I have already contacted Wikimedia but they told me that the block stays put." This is very bad news. Even if a legitimate person complains about this, nothing can be done. Käännöskysymyksiä

Olet ilmeisesti kääntänyt täällä paljon asioita suomeksi. Onko seuraavaan asiaan löytynyt ratkaisua: kun joku pölhö-Kustaa päättää korjata pieniä kirjoitusvirheitä englanninkielisessä tekstissä tai kun lähdeteksti vähäsen muuttuu KOKO PERKELEEN AJAN, niin FuzzyBot käy virtsaamassa tehdyn työn päälle muuttamalla lukuisia kappaleita takaisin englanninkielisiksi vain sen vuoksi, että lähdetekstiin on tehty joku muutos. Olen hieman aloittanut tietosuojakäytännön kääntämistä englannista suomeksi SEN JÄLKEEN KUN sekä Ejs-80 että sinä olette sitä jo kääntäneet, ja nyt saankin luvan kääntää taas kerran tekstiä suomeksi. En jaksa tästä kirjoittaa näille projektin älypäille, joten kysyn sinulta, onko asiasta ollut jossain puhetta. --Pxos (talk) 18:31, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

Aiemmin nimittäin suomenkielinen teksti jäi näkyviin, mutta muuttui punaiseksi. Nyt se korvataan tyystin englanninkielisellä tekstillä. Ymmärrän, että tässä menetelmässä on puolensa, koska teksti on siten aina ajan tasalla, mutta käännöstyötä se haittaa kovasti. Ejs-80 taisi jossain jo ilmoittaa, että hän lopettaa suomentamisen täällä kun ei jaksa tätä. Joo, tästä oli keskustelua kauan aikaa sitten. Kaikki sai tietääkseni alkunsa tästä Bugzilla-ilmoituksesta (ja pitkästä Wikidatassa käydystä keskustelusta), minkä jälkeen jo käännetyt tekstit ovat jääneet englanninkielisen alle. Itsekin olen jälkeenpäin ihmetellyt, miksi tälle asialle ei saada mitään tehtyä. Viimeisin keskustelu, josta olen tietoinen koskien tätä asiaa, löytyy sivulta Bugzilla:58429. Käsittääkseni myös käännösylläpitäjä pystyy vaikuttamaan siihen, mitkä käännökset korvataan uusilla. Kun merkitsee sivut käännettäväksi, niin siinä on vaihtoehto "Älä merkitse käännöksiä vanhentuneiksi". Tosin en ole mikään ekspertti käännös-työkalun käytössä. Ongelma ei olekaan niin paha kuin luulin. Teksti kyllä muuttuu englanniksi, mutta käännöstyökalussa on edelleen suomenkielinen teksti, joka on merkitty vanhentuneeksi. Ensireaktioni järjestelmiin, jotka eivät vaikuta toimivan, on usein turhautunut, mutta kaiken kanssa oppii toimimaan vähitellen näköjään. Käännökset on kyllä aina pakko merkitä vanhentuneiksi silloin, jos alkuperäisteksti on muuttunut. Ilman sitä ei huomaa, että käännös ja lähdeteksti eivät enää vastaa toisiaan. Ratkaisu ongelmiin on lykätä käännösten tekeminen siihen vaiheeseen, kun asiakirja on valmis. Esimerkiksi Ejs-80 käänsi viime syksynä erään luonnoksen, josta taisi muuttua ihan kaikki paitsi otsikko. Siispä antaa tekstien olla englanniksi niin kauan kunnes voi olla melko varma siitä, että lähdetekstistä on saatavilla kohtuullisen vakaa versio. --Pxos (talk) 16:25, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Komissio on todennut osoitepaljastajien osalta, että "have their root cause in poor documentation of activities". Olen itse huomannut saman asian muun muassa Commonsissa, jossa joidenkin tiedostojen poistoperuste on hyvin ylimalkainen kun taas toisten muokkausyhteenvedossa on suora linkki poistokeskusteluun. Olisi kiva, että tietosuojavalvontakomission jäsenenä kiinnittäisit huomiota niihin asioihin, jotka komissio itse on havainnut aiheuttavan ongelmia. --Pxos (talk) 18:49, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Olen samaa mieltä, että osoitepaljastuksia tehdessä on erityisen tärkeää antaa syy, ja vieläpä hyvä sellainen. Mielestäni sen pitäisi olla osoitepaljastuksia tehdessä aina pakollinen. Näin muiden osoitepaljastajien ja ombudsmenien ei tarvitsisi miettiä miksi jokin osoitepaljastus on suoritettu. Olet saattanut ymmärtää jotain väärin; minulle on erittäin tärkeää, että yhteenveto on annettu, ja mielellään myöskin kuvaava sellainen. Joskus voi rapatessa roiskua, ja huolimattomuudesta otetaan opikseen, ja ensi kerralla kirjoitetaan sellainen yhteenveto että kelpaa muillekin. --Stryn (talk) 18:52, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Please consider not translating Tech News in protest

Hi Stryn, I have just noticed that you've been working on the translation of Tech News this weekend.

I wanted to ask you to consider refraining from translating such pages to avoid supporting the recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation. On Sunday, they have implemented a change that gives them an unprecedented, unilateral and unlimited power to protect certain pages on Wikimedia wikis in a manner that makes it impossible for all volunteers — including locally elected administrators — to edit them.

The change was secretly forced through without any community consultation, and the Foundation have used this new feature to actively fight the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.

Your volunteer translations directly sustain such actions of the Foundation. Your work helps them save time and effort that they would otherwise have to invest in recruiting, training and managing new employees, and saves them money they would otherwise have to spend on professional translations.

The recent actions of the Wikimedia Foundation make it very clear that they no longer respect the wishes of the volunteer community, and that they no longer consider us an equal partner. The least we can do to voice our dismay at those actions, and to support our colleagues on the German Wikipedia, is to stop investing our precious time as volunteers on directly helping the Wikimedia Foundation. We can instead translate pages which help all wiki users.

Please take a minute to consider withdrawing your help for the Foundation in protest against their disrespectful treatment of the volunteer community of the German Wikipedia.

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

Hi, thanks for your message. I don't disagree with the move, but the pages should be moved using the "move tool", not just copying from another article to another. lacking attentiveness?

Sorry to say but your recent edits on Template:Lists of Wikipedias showed your attentiveness and zeal to revert any thing done by new users....i think this must be a requirement to become an admin here on wikipedia because i met many such cases.....cheers---Sushilmishra (talk) 22:24, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Nice to hear, but I don't dare to change it from 2 to 3. It has been lvl2 since I started editing Wikipedia, and I know that my English is better now than then. We have done our best to prepare the pages to minimize the work for translators, and if you notice anything else we could do to make translation easier, please do let us know. Guillaume is also happy to answer any questions you might have while translating the documents.

The Structured Data Bee, vol. 1, issue 1

Greetings, thank you for signing up for the Structured Data newsletter and its first edition. With this newsletter, the Structured data team plans on keeping you informed of technical progress, events, and communications to talk about the project, and continued information on how you can participate. This newsletter will be sent approximately every two weeks, and future editions will be translatable prior to publication. If you're new to Wikidata and want more information about how it works in relation to Wikimedia Commons, you can read an introduction to Wikidata for Commons being drafted.

Tech and design

• The software development for this process is still in the planning phases. The idea is to have some functional prototyping done for experimentation and feedback by the end of the year.
• The initial roadmap for development has been posted on Commons. The roadmap is a rough outline and is open to iterations as the team learns where and when to focus its energies.
• There is a page set up for design ideas about what structured data could potentially look like.
• There are forthcoming requests for comment about the particulars of technical architecture on mediawiki.org. Keep an eye on the commons:Commons:Structured data/Get involved page for notification of when the RfCs are posted.

Events and chats

• There was a week-long meeting between the Wikimedia Foundation's Multimedia team, the Wikidata team, and community members, held in Berlin, Germany, at the office of Wikimedia Deutchland on October 6-10. You can read an overview of the event in on this page on Commons. There are also plenty of pictures available on Wikimedia Commons.

• If you would like to read more detail about what was discussed, there are etherpads of notes taken for each day of the event.

• The next IRC office hour to discuss the structured data project will be held on November 20, from 19:30 to 20:30 UTC.

• The second IRC office hour (logs) was held on October 16, and the first (logs) on September 3.

Getting involved

• You've signed up for the newsletter. That's a great first step!
• While working prototypes are being developed, there is a drive to make all files contain machine-readable data on Wikimedia projects.

• The information and sign-up page is located on Meta, at File metadata cleanup drive.
• The MrMetadata tool on labs that will identify files on your wiki(s) that need information templates added.

• A hub has been launched to facilitate communication and documentation for this work.

• There is a frequently-asked questions page that is finishing drafting and will need translated. Keep an eye out for when it is ready if you are interested in translating.
• There will be active organization of the Get involved page as community participation is further organized. There will be work groups, similar to specific Wikiprojects, dedicated to particular aspects of structured data like licensing presentation, design, API performance, and even helping out with this newsletter and other community communications.

There will be much more information and activities around the proposal to develop structured data on Wikimedia Commons. This project is a major undertaking and an important step as the chief provider, repository, and curator of media for Wikimedia projects.
