#VisibleWikiWomen Challenge - Online edit-a-thon |
In March 2018, we launched the #VisibleWikiWomen challenge for the first time - aiming to add openly licensed photographs and illustrations of prominent women from around the world onto Wikipedia. After gathering hundreds of photos in the VisibleWikiWomen category on Wikimedia Commons, what's next?
Join the #VisibleWikiWomen Edit-a-thon from 1-15 May 2018!
Activities
editDuring May 2018 there are still more actions we can all take to increase women's visibility on Wikimedia projects. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Add images of women to existing Wikipedia articles.
- Write and translate articles. See the worklist below for some suggestions of articles to start, improve, or translate!
- Improve descriptions and categories for the women's images already gathered on Wikimedia Commons.
- Create and improve Wikidata items for these women.
- Continue uploading images of notable women and their work to Wikimedia Commons under the #VisibleWikiWomen Category. Here is an Upload Wizard to help you :)
Spread the word
edit- Reach out your volunteers from previous events or editathons.
- Tell them more about #VisibleWikiWomen: invite them to visit #VisibleWikiWomen, or follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
- Share the list of articles with them.
- Ask them to register in the event dashboard so that their contributions can be counted as they improve Wikimedia projects!

Work lists
editThe Big List
editDuring the VisibleWikiWomen challenge over 1000 new photos was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. This represents a lot of articles to create, translate or improve. We are building a list of women that appear in the category VisibleWikiWomen and their respective items on Wikidata.
TAKE A LOOK AT THE WIKIDATA LIST.
This is a work in progress. You can help by finding or creating the Wikidata item of each woman, and adding it to the list.
Suggested articles
editWe have chosen the uploaded pictures of some prominent women who are very interesting, and whose biographies still do not exist in any version of Wikipedia.
Once you choose an article, please assign yourself on the Dashboard, to let other participants know that you are working on it. Feel free to create articles in any Wikipedia language. When you finish it, link your article in the last column, so that everyone can read it!
