Description :
We are sharing two important collections of Islamic art on Wikipedia. The Khalili Collection of Islamic Art is the world's largest such private collection, with objects from 700 to 2000 AD and from every part of the Islamic world. The Khalili Collection of Hajj and the Arts of Pilgrimage has art works, documents, and objects illustrating the long history of the Hajj. Materials from these collections are being shared to address the under-representation of Islamic art on Wikimedia and Wikipedia. There are more than a thousand high-quality images on Wikimedia Commons, many detailed items on Wikidata, and Wikipedia articles which — thanks to the community — have reached multiple languages. With Wikidata, we can create maps, timelines and other new ways to explore the collections. This session is about how the Wikimedia projects can share a more rich and comprehensive view of art from Islamic countries. The presenter has worked in multiple Wikimedian In Residence roles and the session will explore some lessons learned about how to build partnerships with cultural institutions. |
