Wikimania 2021
editLocal member User:Gnangarra had been involved in the organizing of the 2020 wikimania.
Due to the cancellation, he was on the organizing committee for 2021
and was on the introduction to the event
WikiClubWest was the only Australian group meetup in person at Wikimania 2021 meeting at Riff in Perth CBD on the evening of the 14th August 2021.
Current activities 2021 / 2022
editFollowing severe disruptions on events and gatherings in 2020, Wiki Club West is undergoing planning for 2021-2022 in expanded activities relating to outreach and regional project work.
Digitization kit
editIn 2019 WikiClubWest started purchasing the components of a community digitization kit. This is a portable set of equipment that can be taken to libraries, local history societies, and other places with collections that are unlikely to be digitized through other programmes. It results in useful files being uploaded to Commons, but more importantly serves as a skill-building focus for Wikimedians and a means of practical outreach to the partner organisations that are involved.
The kit includes:
- Epson Perfection V850 Pro flat-bed scanner
- Trolley
- Power board and extension cord
- Two LED lights (with power supplies and carry cases)
- Two lighting tripods
- t.b.c.
All files are uploaded to categories within commons:Category:WikiClubWest digitization.
Wiki Towns
editIn some cases the towns have pedia's such as Fremantle, Toodyay, and York. Other Local Governments also have enquired and investigated such collaborations.

Earlier Partnerships
editState Library of Western Australia 2016 and 2017
editWe have been very fortunate in having collaborated with and utlised facilities with the State Library of Western Australia.
We have regular meetups and workshops, usually at the State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) — a research, reference and public lending library located in the Perth Cultural Centre in Perth, Western Australia. In 2017, SLWA set up an 'incubator space' on the first floor of the library, as a place for various community groups (such as Wikimedia Australia) and others to interact with the library's collections in a more in-depth way, and we have an ongoing presence in this space. Good wifi is available, and four library computers.

2017 activity in SLWA
editThe Studio 001 incubator space (which used to be called Bibliotech until that turned out to be a protected term) has a number of desks, fast wifi, and other facilities to make it a good place for research, collaboration, and learning. For more information, see the SLWA website.
Wikimedia Australia (WMAU) is working with SLWA to have Wikimedians working in the incubator space for an initial period from 20 May 2017 until 18th August 2017, after which the partnership may continue with the space being shared with other like-minded groups (such as the WA Genealogical Society, other WA libraries, and possibly Landgate).
The main aim for our time in the space will be to help interested people enhance and create Wikimedia material, ideally using references to the SLWA collections. (On a related note, there is also work being done on making it easier to construct Wikipedia citation templates from SLWA catalogue entries.)
WMAU will use the space for Strategy discussions, talks, wikibombs, and other activities. There will be a Storylines project kiosk hosted in the room while we are there. Community Tech software engineer Sam Wilson will be working from the space.
Experienced Wikimedians will be on site in the BiblioTECH space for most days of July 2017.
We welcome any visitors no matter how simple or complex the questions, or the subject in relation to the Wikimedia projects.
During the month of July we are available to offer small groups, short and easy to understand presentations on Wikimedia projects, ranging from specific projects (Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikisource, and so on), on how to upload photographs or to edit articles.
If you know a small group who would like to come in to learn more about Wikimedia please contact us to arrange a time suitable to you and the Wikimedians.
