Abstract:

This hackathon will combine physical and remote participants into teams and let them collaborate on attempting to achieve proof-of-concept of automated, over-the-air updating of offline (Kiwix) libraries such as Wikipedia, using a simulated TV signal in the hackathon venue. Each team will be issued with a receiver device which is integrated with a server containing a Kiwix library. The devices will later be used for a pilot deployment with a broadcast partner. See [OTA Update Hackathon proposal]

Level of advancement: medium
Special requirements: The event requires a small venue to be set aside for participants to come and go during the entire Indaba.
Extra information: Etherpad
How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region?

It is hoped that this will become a new feature of Wiki Indaba, further enhancing its standing as "Africa's Wikimania." Of course, in the long run all low-resource communities without good/affordable internet can gain access to updated offline resources. Even school text books and homework can be distributed by datacasting.

Update: 25 Aug 2024

edit

We have confirmation that the event is continuing in October in Johannesburg, and online! Other projects, such as an online keyboard for certain languages, will also be included. Stand by for details.
