ReCreate[1] is an umbrella civil society group, primarily focused on copyright advocacy. The movement comprises users and creators of copyright, including WikiMedia ZA, Blind SA, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu), South African Guild of Actors (SAGA), scholars, authors, musicians and more.
ReCreate[2] would like to host a 60 - 90 minute workshop at this year’s Wiki Indaba Conference. This session can also be framed as a “panel” or “roundtable”
The Recreate collective has been primarily focused on participation in copyright legislative processes, as well as education and consultation with government and the public about copyright history and the need for reform.
ReCreate has also been part of facilitating broader discussions on access to knowledge, including The Right to Research in Africa conference[[3]], co-hosted in January last year. This international and progressive initiative was done in partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation, the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP), of Washington College of Law, and various other partners from around the continent and globe.
This conference is also part of our 2023 Wikimedia Alliance outcomes. ReCreate and The Black Stripe Foundation, has documented these and many lectures, now available on Wiki-platforms, with the intention of storing more.
ReCreate also put together a Best Practices Guide [[4]], and overview of Copyright Reform in Africa [Reform in Africa]. all of which has been shared on Meta Wiki and Wiki Commons.
ReCreate Wiki Indaba 2024 Proposal
This year, the Wiki Indaba will be hosted in Johannesburg, which is home to many of ReCreate’s representatives. This provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase and discuss some of the work we’ve been doing, with Wikimedia ZA about civil society-led copyright reform, with representatives from most of our member organisations.
We can share some of the insights from the Best Practices Guide and Africa map, and if possible, show-case a mini documentary on copyright advocacy in South Africa.
