Abstract:
Wiki Loves Names aims to establish a comprehensive database documenting names from diverse ethnic groups and language communities across the region. This initiative recognizes the cultural, historical, and social significance of West African names, which are often underrepresented in existing resources. The project's objectives include compiling a detailed repository of names with meanings, origins, and cultural contexts, utilizing platforms like Wiktionary for documentation. Through partnerships with language communities and Wikimedia User Groups, the initiative seeks to ensure accuracy, diversity, and sustainability in name documentation. Community engagement activities will involve local historians, linguists, and cultural experts to gather and authenticate name data, fostering increased awareness and appreciation of West African naming traditions. Ultimately, the initiative aims to strengthen cultural connections and preserve the rich heritage of West African communities through shared knowledge of names and naming traditions. |
