Connections made:
During the conference, I got to see, hear about and learn from great people doing amazing things in their communities, such as Geoffrey Katerrenga, Ruby Damenshie-Brown etc. I also got to forge closer, more solid relationships with some prominent members of my Wikimedia community. These people have encouraged me to be more active and purposeful about my involvement with the foundation.
.
Learning points
I learned about how useful it could be to take note of important national and international holidays, utilising interest in these events to generate new knowledge and Wikimedia content. I also took note of the importance of allowing marginalised groups (such as refugees etc) to have the opportunity to tell their own stories and concerns. Also, I gained an interest in the potential of Wikimedia to revitalise African languages.
Outcome
I would say that Wiki Indaba was very successful in promoting collaboration and cooperation between Wiki volunteers, across national, regional and international boundaries. The ideas and plans presented during the conference will positively influence communities, which I believe will be noted in the coming year. On a personal level, I have developed a stronger connection to the wider Wikimedia volunteer Community, and I will contribute as much as I can to Wikimedia projects, ensuring that my work is deliberate, authentic and meaningful.
