Description :
I will look at challenges we faced at Swahili Wikipedia dealing with sudden outbursts of content creation by inexperienced editors. These sudden peaks have largely been caused by topical campaigns initiated by Wikimedia. Such events have proven to be a strong motivation for inexperienced new authors to produce much content, usually by translating content from enwiki, frequently using computer translations. The results were several times large amounts of unacceptable gibberish which surpassed the ability of the few experiences editors doing quality control to weed them out. We tried to react by internal discussions with all involved in organizing editathons, getting a few more editors on board for control and agreeing and implementing a stronger blocking policy. Still the challenge remains and I would like to hear from other small wikipedias if they faced similar challenges. I would also like to hear from those who did editathons in English what their experiences were and if they followed up on the survival rate of articles created in editathons with newbies. |
