Description :
Librarians are uniquely positioned as stakeholders in the knowledge creation and dissemination ecosystem. The Librarians Week, 2020 was a first time introduction to Wikipedia for many African librarians. Subsequently, the Wikipedia in African Libraries course sought to immerse these professionals more into the Wikimedia movement not just for themselves but for the thousands of user communities they serve all over the continent. Highlights of the first and second African Librarians Week as well as the course show the growing awareness and acceptance of Wikipedia and sister projects as platforms for information provision in Africa. This presentation investigates how these engagements can be scaled across borders, within communities and in different settings, and most importantly used as new pathways for promoting the building of structural equity in opening up knowledge about Africa. |
