Etymology
editWikiSungkai is a combination of the words Wiki & Sungkai. Sungkai [suŋ.kaɪ̆] is a local term for breaking fast or iftar.
Background
editWikiSungkai was originally conducted in 2023 when one of Malaysian volunteers organized a WikiSungkai workshop for the Bajau Sama community in Sabah, Malaysia during Ramadan of that year. In 2024, other volunteers organized a similar workshop with students from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
Since WCUGM have joined the Wiki Loves Ramadan (WLR) campaign for the Malay Wikipedia and Bajau Sama Wikipedia in 2025, they decided to organize more workshops with local societies as well.
