Wikimedia Foundation's success lies in the volunteer community base that creates content, uploads content, formulates policies, edits and improves shared content, mediates disputes, researching and providing guidance on assistance on best practices, solicits assistance from outsiders and act as public relations representatives for various projects. This can involve high level participation in cultural and educational institutions. Volunteers have helped create local chapters that enable the Foundation to improve local fundraising efforts. Volunteers serve on boards, doing accounting for chapters, keeping notes for minutes, working through the process of establishing a non-profit and doing all the tasks to keep it running while coordinating with the chapter, the Foundation, their on wiki project contributors and trying to have a life. Volunteers do fantastic work. In some cases, this volunteer work leads to paid positions inside a chapter, inside a cultural institution or educational institution or at the Wikimedia Foundation. For most contributors, especially women in leadership positions, this does not happen but we carry on because we believe in what we're doing.

WikiWomenCamp is about developing and providing leadership skills to women inside the Wikimedia Movement. Below are some biographies about women currently involved in helping to make Wikimedia Foundation projects a success. The following are biographies of some women who are organising or attending WikiWomenCamp. We come from diverse backgrounds from all corners of the globe, have different educational levels and different levels of involvement inside particular projects.

Beatriz Busaniche

Beatriz Busaniche is one of the principle organizers of WikiWomenCamp and is handling most of the on the ground work in Argentina, where she serves at the Executive Director of Wikimedia Argentina. She has been a free software activist since 2003, is a member of Vía Libre Foundation, was a founding member of Wikimedia Argentina. Currently public leader of Creative Commons in Argentina.[1] She became involved on Wikipedia in 2006 on the Spanish version and has been active ever since.[1]

Busaniche is a forty-one year old from Río Gallegos, Argentina, and speaks four languages: Spanish (native), English (expert), French (beginner), and Portuguese (beginner).[2] In 1994, she graduated from the National University of Rosario with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Communication with a focus on mass media. In 2011, she earned a Masters of Intellectual Property from FLACSO Argentina.[1] She is writing a Master thesis on Intellectual Property and Human Rights.[1] Professionally, she serves at the public leader of Creative Commons in Argentina, and is a part time professor at the University of Buenos Aires in Social Sciences field.[1] She has served as the project Manager for Vía Libre Foundation, a free software and free culture organization based in Argentina.[2]

In her work with Wikimedia Argentina, she has accomplished several notable things. In her role of founder and Executive Director, involvement dating to 2007, she has handled press contacts, events coordination, translations and GLAM Projects. In November 2008, she ran a Wikipedia Academy with Jimmy Wales, helping to handle press contacts and event logistics. In 2008 and 2009, she was involved with Wikimanía 2009 International Wikimedia Conference held in Buenos Aires. She served as the Logistics General Coordinator and Press coordinatior. [2][3]

She has presented and participated at a number of conferences including Wikimania 2010, [4], International Simposium on public policy for digital heritage in Sao Paulo, Brazil, [5], World Social Forum, “Women in Free Software” Conference at Centro Cultural de la Cooperación, Conference at Centro Cultural de la Cooperación, Festival on Free Culture and Copyleft in FM La Tribu, Free software and free culture conference in Santo Domingo, 8th Regional Free Software conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Free knowledge, Free Technology Conference in Spain, OLPC workshop for teachers in Colonia, Uruguay, CONSOL, National Free Software Conference, “WIPO and WTO Negotiations in Intellectual Property” Conference, WIPO General Assembly in September 2007, and communicado Conference to name a few.[2]

Laura Hale

Laura Hale born in Wheaton, Illinois, United States where she graduated as a Bachelor of General Studies from Northern Illinois University in 2002 and received her Masters of Science of Education in Instructional Technology in 2005[1]. Currently she is finishing her PhD in Communications at Faculty of Health of University of Canberra, Australia, where she has been studying since April 2010[2].

Laura has been passionate about volunteering and working in education since 2001. She first volunteered to in schools in 1996, where she was a member of the technology team. She started working as an instructional aide in libraries & computer labs at Community Unit School District 300[3], working at several levels in the United States. In 2004, she did an internship in Instructional Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia at British International School. She also worked as a high school English teacher on Tinian, Northern Marianas Islands for several months[1].

Laura's love for writing, research, and analytic thinking lead her to create Writers University in 2000[4] which changed name to Fan History Wiki and moved to MediaWiki software in 2006[5]. In 2008, she started contribute to AboutUs[6] and in 2009, she contributed to WikiHow[7]. All that work with wikis lead her to WMF projects where she stated editing English Wikipedia in February 2011. As part of her work as Wikipedian she had 41 articles in DYK section of English Wikipedia's main page[8] and created 551 articles in this wiki[9], from which 3 became good articles[8].

Laura became a member of Wikimedia Australia in 2010, and was elected as Vice President in October 9, 2011[10], one of the 9 out of 38 Wikimedia chapters that contribute financially to assist the Foundation in supporting its projects[11]. She participates in several GLAM projects in Australia[12][13][14][15] and is currently working on a project to do outreach in Micronesia[16].

She is the Wikipedian in Residence for the History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia project, attached to the Australian Paralympic Committee and National Sport Information Centre since May 2011[17]. As part of her residency, she created a guide to writing BLPs[18], attended several workshops focused in improve local Paralympians articles, worked on improving Australian Paralympic Movement related content, advised on how to engage WMF projects as engagement relates to content and policy[19], scanned images for image donations[20], and worked with Wikipedians to provide sources to help them improve articles[21].

Laura believes women's and transgender participation in wiki technology can be assessed by empowering women volunteers and strengthening the women's community [22] and along with Béria Lima (WMPT) and Beatriz Busaniche (WMAR), Laura become one of three central organizers for Wiki Women Camp in Argentina, an open conference to exchange ideas, lessons learned, and best practices that are hoped to be applied worldwide within the movement.

Béria Lima

Béria Lima is one of the primary organisers of WikiWomenCamp. Outside of Wikipedia, she is a twenty-six year old Brazilian woman who speaks three languages: Portuguese, Spanish and English. She currently lives in Brazil. Her involvement with Wikimedia is three-fold: She is involved behind the scenes as an active part of the Chapters movement, she is involved on various wikiprojects like Wikipedia, and active in Foundation related issues.

Beria's first involvement with chapters was with Wikimedia Brazil in 2008. When she moved to Portugal, she connected with the local Wikimedia community and became a founding member of Wikimedia Portugal and has been on the board continually since 2009. In her role as a chapter board member, she has taken the lead, organised or been involved with several projects including Wikipedia Academy[1][2], 10th Wikipedia birthday [3][4], Wiki Loves MonumentsWiki Loves Monuments Portugal, and wrote many chapter reports Wikimedia Portugal Financial, Activities and Annual Reports, Outside her chapter, she has been involved with IberoCoop and helping to set up new Wikimedia chapters.[5][6] In 2011, she became a member of Wikimedia Argentina. She has provided some assistance to Wikimedia India and its members.[7][8][9][10] At the request of Tanvir, she gave advice on how Bangladeshis could establish a chapter.

Outside of chapters, Beria is involved on various WMF wikis, having started editing on 5 October 2007 on the Portuguese language Wikipedia.[11] Since that time, she has made over 45,000 edits to Portuguese Wikipedia and created over 1,100 articles. She was an admin, bureaucrat and CheckUser on the project. She became active on Commons in 2008, and has over 14,500 edits on the project and has shared over 1,700 pictures[12][13], she is also a adm in this project. Beria is also active on Meta, where she has made over 2,200 contributions and is admin. In 2011, she ran to be a steward on Meta.[14] Beyond that, she is a sysop on Strategy, a sysop on Wikimedia Portugual at wikimedia.pt, has flags for account creator and roll backer on English Wikipedia and is flagged as an editor and review on Portuguese Wikisource and Wikinews. She helps behind the scenes as a OTRS agent, a position she has held since December 2008.[15] She has assisted in closing over 800 tickets, making her the most active Portuguese language OTRS agent.

Beria is involved with the Foundation as a volunteer. One of her roles is being a part of GAC, where she helps to review grants submitted by the community. In this role, she generally helps to review around sixty percent of all grants submitted. She has participated in fundraising as a Portuguese translator for banner ads.[16][17]

The community has been supportive of Beria's work, demonstrating this by giving her barn stars and other forms of recognition.[18][19][20] Sadly, not all of Beria's experiences have been positive. As a result of her involvement, she been subjected to death threats, threats of rape, bullying and other harassment from men who represent a wide spectrum of the leadership inside WMF projects.
