editImplementation of the Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grant Pathway
Begun in the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2024, this program involves the collaborative development, process implementation, community liaison and management, reporting and review of the pilot year of diversified funding processes for communities wishing to apply for rapid grants to Wiki Loves Africa, and Wiki Loves Women’s SheSaid campaign, and potentially others.
Anticipated organisational responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Administrative support
- Process management
- Process oversight and review
- Grant applicant support
- Jury facilitation
- Creation and implementation of feedback mechanisms, surveys, check-ins,
- Metrics, documentation and recording,
- Report compilation and collation, etc.
Long-term strategy: Wiki In Africa to 2030
editPreparing the organisation for the next 5 years. This involves a review of the activities and results of the previous 5 years and consultation with partners, participants, funders, community members and external consultants both asynchronously and, potentially, at a strategy retreat (funding dependent). This would result in a 5 year plan, reviewed strategic vision, reviewed theory of change, review of regional and global positioning, and sustainability options. This review would provide for the foundation for Wiki In Africa’s multiyear grant applications to the WMF and additional funders.
Please note: this process is not yet fully formulated and, therefore not included in the budget
Anticipated elements include:
- Staff and advisors retreat to map a 5-year plan for the organisation in 2025
- Strategise and formulate 5-year plan from 2026 until 2030
- Consultation with the broader community, partners, funders and stakeholders into Wiki In Africa’s perceived and expected role;
- Explore and review funding and grant support options for our programs.
- Ensure organisational sustainability beyond 2030.
Budget Notes
edit- Inflation:
- Most budget items, except contracted remuneration, have been adjusted using a proposed low average of 5% (the average is based on 2024 inflationary adjustments in the US, South Africa and France).
- For those contractors who live in more volatile economies, we have factored in that being paid in USD will provide a buffer against inflation. As such, we propose an 8% increase that allows for both inflation and a small performance-based increase.
- The co-EDs have a minimal increase based on the lower end of projected inflation in their country (2.3% for France and 5% for South Africa). No performance-based increase has been applied.
- Programmes Expenses
- Mostly inflation-based increases (5%) across most programs
- We have transferred the budget items from the Media Training to the new WikiLearn IP training project and added a small budget item for the new WikiAfrica Awards program
- Upskilling, fundraising, evaluation and general outreach support: Travel:
- Travel: local and regional travel has been increased to cover "scholarships" failures :); Wikimania situation + ED annual meeting
- Other increases have either stayed the same or are in line with proposed 5% inflationary adjustment
- Administrative expenses:
- Webmaster services: increase related to the consolidation of online web assets and application of new branding and design language across all websites
- In 2024 we implement a new bookkeeping system; this requires a separate new software line item
- Other increases have either stayed the same or are in line with proposed 5% inflationary adjustment
- General staff compensation
- Inflation adjustments
- Limited performance-based increases
