Make Languages Count for Sustainable Development

Every 21st February is globally set aside to mark and celebrate the International Mother Tongue Day. The event celebrates and raises awareness of the linguistic and cultural diversity of indigenous languages while encouraging multilingualism. Initially acknowledged by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was later formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly through the adoption of a UN resolution in 2002. Participation is open to all!
In the 2025 edition, themed Make Languages Count for Sustainable Development, the Wikitongues community, in collaboration with the Wikimedia community, will take part in the global commemoration and celebration of the International Mother Tongue Day. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance articles related to over 7,000 languages globally and promote ongoing efforts to develop and protect indigenous languages worldwide. All activities and content submissions must align with this year's celebration theme.
