Personal Statement: Considerations for Personal Statement

  • Why do you want to join the Wiki Women* Task Force?

I would like to join the Wiki Women* Task Force because it is so important that Wikimedia leads the way in addressing the gender divide operating at many different levels, both within the movement and in across society. If we care about free knowledge we must be able to support and encourage intersectional diversity including gender in content and all aspects of participation and representation. I would like to contribute to achieving this aim.

  • What specific skills or experiences can you contribute to the Wiki Women* Task Force?

I have extensive experience in research and project management across the arts, humanities and social sciences particularly in the library and university sectors. I have been editing intermittently since 2015 on English Wikipedia and more recently have been researching sources on Wikipedia and Wikidata. I was a Wikimedian in Residence based at a Research Centre for one year and am currently a 'Resident Wikimedian' at the University of Victoria, Canada. I was on the Board of Wikimedia Australia for 4 years and President for 2 years from 2020-2024. Key outcomes for the Board in this period was securing 3 year funding for 2 staff members and commissioning two reports on Indigenous approaches to WP editing. I have experience in public policy issues and advocacy in a range of areas including making submissions on behalf of WMAU on copyright, digital rights and privacy. I presented on Women and Wikimedia at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore and am well versed in the range of issues impacting gender issues across Wikimedia and more broadly. I am deeply interested in cross cultural engagement and have experience working in cultural exchange programs across the Asia region.

  • What are your goals for participating in the Wiki Women* Task Force?

To work collaboratively and contribute to defining the goals of the group and supporting their strategic implementation.

  • How do you work across diverse group?

I try to listen and understand the context of participants and the aims of the group. To be respectful and empathetic to different perspectives. And to try to find practical outcomes that further the goals of the group and contribute my skills when and if they are relevant. I'm happy to use whatever technology is required to facilitate communication and see this as an essential part of the process as well as meeting in person when possible.
