Wiki Workshop College Street is an one day workshop for the aspirant new contributors from the region. It will be held for the first time in the Vidyastu Online Platform, at College Street, Kolkata on 16th June 2024. This Workshop is organized by the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group and Vidyastu Online Platform jointly. Wikipedia is main project of the Wikimedia Foundation that focuses on internet-based, multilingual general knowledge & information.

Wikipedia Workshop with Vidyastu at College street in 2024 03

Participants would get introduced to Wikipedia, (free content online encyclopedia) and will have a hands-on editing session. The editing session will be held both in English and Bengali. The workshop will also focus on uploading photos in Wikimedia commons and using them in respective articles of Wikipedia. Participation in this workshop fosters the development of valuable skills like research, content writing, and digital literacy. It will improve to evaluate reliable references, online information, and communicate effectively which shall enhance professional abilities of participants.

  • This workshop is intended to promote Wikipedia for students completely free of charge, with no financial transaction or remuneration related to it

The session started with an opening session from Nirmalya Sengupta of Vidyastu. Rangan Datta provided a brief introduction to Wikimeida and its various projects through a PPT presentation. Pinak Biswas elaborated on the basic guidelines and editing Wikipedia and creating new articles. This was followed by hands-on editing of Bengali Wikipedia, which was conducted by Tarun Samanta and Sujata Nettime . All the participants were very active during the sessions and came up with a number of questions. The second half was focused on SWikimedia Commons. Rangan Datta and Sumit Surai conducted this session with live uploads. Since the participants were not carrying photos live upload session was not possible. The least session was taken by Tarun Samanta elaborating on the various activities of the West Bengal Wikimedia User Group. The session ended with the distribution of certificates.

Future plans

Since, there was an overwhelming response from the participants the West Bengal Wikimedia User Group are planning further collaboration with Vidyastu. This started with a Whatsapp group where the mentors are helping the new editors with relevant advice. An online meet has been arranged on 13 July 8:00 pm. Wiki Online Workshop Vidyastu 2024
