Abstract: Sound is a wonderful way of showing how things are pronounced. It is much more intuitive than systems like SAMPA. Pronunciations can be recorded in Commons and be available as a resource to our projects. It is worthwhile to have pronunciations in the local language for things like people and places. It shows that you cannot pronounce a word from text not knowing the language.
A workshop will consist of the following parts:
- Why sound files are useful
- .ogg files the sound standard promoted by Wikimedia
- Audacity, a gratis program that does save .ogg files.
- Demonstration of Audacity.
- The convention for the names of sound files in Commons.
- Demonstration of uploading sound files to Commons
- Adding some sound files to an article of one of the projects
