Wikimedia Foundation announces 2006 Wikimania Awards competition

edit

Boston, MA - July 22, 2006

Wikimedia, the foundation behind the online encylopedia Wikipedia, is proud to announce the 2006 Wikimania Awards competition. Nominations will be accepted until August 3, 2006. The Wikimania Awards were created to promote the creation of excellent free content around the world.

The Awards are being held in conjunction with Wikimania 2006 (August 4-6, at Harvard University), the second annual international conference celebrating Wikimedia's projects and the use of wikis to organize knowledge.

In the last few decades, copyright laws have become more restrictive and automatic than ever, and more and more of our culture is now inaccessible. The goal of the Wikimania awards is to raise awareness for and celebrate the great art and writing generously released under licenses that allow their free reuse by other artists or projects like Wikipedia. The contest has 9 categories of media open for submission right now, including artwork, maps and diagrams, photography, audio, video, and animation. A final category exists for media created on the way to or at the actual conference, and will not be open until August 2nd. Any piece of media created after August 8th of last year is eligible, as long as it has been released under a sufficiently free license (or into the public domain). The final winners will be picked by an international panel of judges familiar with free content, including Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing.net and members of the Creative Commons and Participatory Culture Foundation teams.

In addition to the contest, the conference will also include presentations from Jimmy Wales, Lawrence Lessig, Brewster Kahle, and some of the most active contributors to the Wikimedia projects. The conference will be a chance for those most interested and invested in Wikimedia to discuss the present and future of the projects (including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikisource, and more); as well as their unique social dynamics; technical updates; and how to improve and verify information created in free knowledge projects.

Please visit http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_Awards for details about the rules and categories.

Rules and community announcement

edit

see also foundation:Template:News-en

The Wikimania Awards were created to promote the creation of excellent
free content around the world. The authors of such content have made
millions of ad-hoc collages, designs, and art exhibits possible.
Awards are being given to the best entries in each of nine categories,
covering video, animation, audio, photography, and drawing.

The Rules are understandable, yet complex:

 - Each submission can be entered for one category only.
 - Submissions must be licensed under the GFDL or Creative Commons
Share-Alike 2.0 license, multi licensed including one of these
licenses, or released into the public domain. They must be clearly
copyright compliant (e.g., there should be no copyright concerns
about the subject of the media)
 - Submissions should be suitable for use on one or more Wikimedia
     projects (not Commons alone)

 - Entries should be uploaded to commons and listed at the gallery page
     on the Wikimania2006 site : http://wikimania2006.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_Awards

 - Submissions may not have been uploaded to a Wikimedia project prior
     to August 8, 2005
 - The closing date for most submissions is August 1, 2006.
The closing date for the last category (material created at or on the
way to Wikimania) is 23:00 EST, August 5, 2006

 - File types:
    - Audio should be submitted as .ogg files
    - Photos should be submitted as .jpg files
    - Video should be submitted as .ogg or .mpeg

 - Photos should be suitable for printing at 20 X 30cm. Audio and video
should be no more than 50 MB in size after compression

 - Submissions may be digitally manipulated to improve any aspect, but
should remain a true and accurate representation of the subject.

Judging:

 * Preference is given to original work (as opposed to material created
    by government or other projects)
 * Extra credit will be given to difficult-to-obtain subjects. That
means that the immolating unicorns have an advantage over your little
sister with a flower. Although we do realize that your sister is
special and there is no other like her in the world, we take a strong
    pro-unicorn stance.

Center for Citizen Media "Unconference"

August 7, 2006 9 am - 4pm Harvard Law School, Pound Hall

On August 7, Berkman Center fellow and Center for Citizen Media director Dan Gillmor will host a day of discussion on citizen media at Harvard Law School. The purpose is to brainstorm some key aspects of citizen journalism, including principles, techniques, tools, business models and more. The conference will be in the "unconference" format, where the audience are the experts and there are no formal panels, but rather skilled moderators and session leaders drawing out what we collectively know so we can learn from each other.

Moderators include Jeff Jarvis, Andrew Lih, Lisa Williams, Ethan Zuckerman, Tom Stites, and Steve Garfield.

The gathering will take place at Harvard Law School's Pound Hall, beginning at 9 a.m. and finishing at around 4 p.m. We'll also plan to have birds-of-a-feather dinners in Cambridge, most likely hosted by several speakers, for those who want to stick around. The cost of the day is $20 at the door, to cover food costs (we'll provide morning coffee, lunch and an afternoon snack). Registration is limited to 100 people, so sign up today!
