Vision

Our vision for Wikimania 2016 is "born from dreams, weaving the future".

The women dreamweavers of the T'boli people in the southern Philippines create beautiful weaved cloths called t'nalak (pronounced "tinalak"), considered to be greatly valued masterpieces in Philippine art. We chose the t'nalak weave to embody the spirit of Wikimania 2016.

We envision Wikimania 2016 to be an event celebrating our present, future and past: as a community, as a movement, as individuals and as advocates of free culture. We are all on the same journey, and though we differ on how we're fulfilling the aims of the Wikimedia movement, we all believe in Wikimedia making the world better, one edit at a time. This spirit is what makes Wikimedia unique: we do things in so many ways, and yet somehow, we complement one another in as many ways as well.

You could say that we are all dreamweavers. And we continue to imagine a world where we imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. We look forward to kindling, growing and continuing that spirit at Wikimania.

Themes and tracks

The program for Wikimania 2016 we hope will factor in not only our theme of looking back at our past to build our future, but also to look at how we want to build Wikimedia from a uniquely Southeast Asian perspective. To that, we propose two new tracks specifically for the conference:

Vision, Identity, Community: Wikimedia in Southeast Asia – Building on the impending integration of ASEAN member countries in 2015, this track is dedicated to how the Wikimedia movement's vision and mission have been realized—or are being realized—in the eleven countries of Southeast Asia, with a particular emphasis on the growth of the Wikimedia projects in the region's native languages, the communities that animate Wikimedia in the region, and how they can better work together.
Beautiful Nightmares: Building, Destroying and Reconstituting Communities – Wikipedia is turning fifteen in 2016, and we'd like to look back at fifteen years of us building communities, the challenges we've faced in maintaining those communities over the years, and what we can do to ensure the long-term survival of not only Wikipedia, but Wikipedians as well, in the future.

In addition, we look forward to presentations highlighting our traditional tracks, and we're open to suggestions on how we can better improve our program.

Keynote speakers

The selection of keynote speakers for Wikimania 2016 reflects both the theme of the conference, as elaborated earlier, and an emphasis on bringing a uniquely Southeast Asian perspective to the discussion about the Wikimedia movement's values, the goals of free culture, and the future of our movement at large. Subject to approval by the Wikimedia Foundation's Conference Coordinator, some of our ideas include:

Miriam Defensor Santiago, Senator of the Republic of the Philippines, former Judge of the International Criminal Court and primary sponsor of the Magna Carta for Philippine Internet Freedom. She famously mentioned her Wikipedia article in a privilege speech denouncing former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile in the wake of the Priority Development Assistance Fund scam.
Edgardo M. Chatto, Governor of Bohol, where during his tenure Bohol was struck by an earthquake that destroyed much of the province's built cultural heritage and, ultimately, became the genesis of Wikimedia Philippines' Cultural Heritage Mapping Project.
Augusto "Toti" Villalón, premier Filipino architect in heritage conservation, cultural heritage planner, honorary member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and awarded the title of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the Ministry of Culture of France in recognition of his exemplary professional achievement in the international advancement of architecture and heritage conservation in the Philippines, France, and in many other countries around the globe. He is a champion and supporter of the Wikimedia Philippines Cultural Heritage Mapping Project.
Manuel L. Quezon III, Undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Operation Office, historian, TV host and Wikipedian.
Michael Charleston "Xiao" Chua, historian, professor at the De La Salle University and TV host. He spoke at the Second Manila Edit-a-thon on the role of Wikipedians as "modern-day custodians of history".
Eugene Alvin Villar, Chairman of Wikimedia Philippines, President of OpenStreetMap Philippines, the Philippines' first Wikipedian and prominent local free culture advocate.
Peter Lorenzana, professor at the Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines, specializing in cultural studies of technology.

In addition to these keynote speaker suggestions, we're also open to suggestions for keynote speakers from outside the Philippines, particularly from the rest of Southeast Asia.
