Goals

edit

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

  • Yes, set goals were met, as the Wiki In Africa team members were efficiently supported to participate in the Wikimania 2021 Conference. We are happy with the overall outcome.

Outcome

edit

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Wikimania 2021 kicked off the season with the global Wikimedia community coming together over one week in August. It was an exciting online conference, and great to see so many friends - even if only on a screen. The whole Wiki In Africa team was at the Wikimania in force. We participated in several manners.

First, as member of the Wikimania Steering Committee, Florence attended many meetings all around the year, to establish the strategy for 2021 and beyond, to recruit the core team of Wikimania 2021, and to advise on the event organization.

During the conference itself, we had

  • Wiki Loves Africa 2021 winners announced during Wikimedia and GLAM in the Global South (Part 1): Heritage, Wikimedia and GLAM in the Global South (Part 2): Libraries and Excellence Seeking. In this case, Isla joined a collective long program, with Glam partners
  • Candy presented the Wiki Loves Women Focus Group Members programme, with the attendance of several Focus Group members
  • We joined the Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 and beyond session, with Florence in particular talking about the ISA tool. Main speakers were Campaign organizers and the session was lead by Lodewijk
  • Florence enjoyed participating to a playful session organized by Ziko Van Dijk One Country in six pictures where the goal of each speaker was to choose (and explain their choice) 6 pictures to describe a country.
  • Finally, Ceslause hosted the WikiAfrica Hour - The Xperience. This session was organized in two parts. One part was a long recorded video providing highlights of the first episodes of this Vodcast. The second part was a live session during Wikimania with several guests from Africa.

Learning

edit

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • The reception of the various presentations made by Wiki In Africa team members was good as expected.
  • What did not work so well?
  • The WikiAfrica Hour: The Xperience pre-recording was great, though it lacked a "stay-tuned" transition to the Live session presented by Ceslause, which didn't help the initial audience to stay back for the Live session as they thought the presentation was entirely just the pre-recording.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  • We already are doing better, which is proven by our WikiAfrica Hour WikiIndaba 2021 presentation, and the transition between the pre-recording and the Live session presented by Florence Devouard and Ceslause at the 2021 WikiCOnvention Francophone.
