How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I attended Wikimania in person.

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?

I spent the scholarship on transportation to the physical gathering held at Ilorin, Nigeria. I also spent the funds on data to join sessions virtually and on accommodation.

Takeaways – choose 3 specific Wikimania sessions you attended and describe your key take-aways per session.

Session 1:Wikimania 2022: 10 years of Wikidata Day 2 Tent 1

Denny Vrandecic founded wikidata in 2012. At wikidata’s initial launching it helped the Wikipedia community manage the site linking via a manual process. Wikidata also helped engage people who weren’t interested in making long prose for edits by allowing an opportunity to publish in data forms. Wikidata gave the flexibility of having editors making changes on their own will by giving the freedom of the usage of adding QUALIFIERS and many more.

Session 2:Grand tour of Wikimedia Day 3 Tent 1

Grand tour is capacity building for the Wikimedia movement, as well as for the individual. Grand tour is a small group of travellers (3-5 persons) travel to several (2-3, 4) affiliates to gain and share knowledge. Each grand tour follows a theme (GLAM, Educative volunteer involvement e.t.c). Each participant has their goals with that theme.

My major key take away point from this session was what the Grand Tour Stands for, its CORE VALUES. 1. SUSTAINABILITY i)Environmental ii)Economic iii)Social 2. Equity 3. Openness and transparency 4. Personal development

Session 3:THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF BUILDING A COMMUNITY Day 3 Tent 3

People on the Wikimedia Platform 1. University Students 2. Non geeks are free to join 3. Men and women

Challenges of building a community 1. Volunteering culture seems to be missing, people are only willing to get into something they will be paid for doing. 2. Internet Access. 3. Rare Knowledge of Copyright, People are just interested in making edits without knowing if it’s free to use. 4. Convincing Local Officials, Support is needed to get centers, Provisions. 5. Retaining Participants.

Lessons on building a community 1. There’s a need to have regular meet-ups. 2. Work as a team. 3. Know your community Status and people of your community. 4. Initiate and invite community members. 5. Be transparent about decisions. 6. Remember you are a volunteer like others. 7. Create Roles, Policies and workflow in the community. 8. Interact with each other on daily basis. 9. Have social media presence.

How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?

I connected with other people at the gathering by sharing my experiences on the wikimedia community for the past 8 months and also heard from others as they shared their own experience as well and that has braced me up to contribute better to the wikimedia community. I showed up for the event all through the 4-day event which helped maximize my celebration with others and enlightened me from the virtual programs to the in-house participants.
