Wikimania 2022/Scholarships/Dagbani Wikimedians User Group/Report
Goals
editDid you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
Yes, we met our goals, and the event was characterized by delight and joy. Dagbani Wikimedians User Group sought to provide appreciable support to its members at Gurene Wikimedia Community, Moore Wikimedia Community, and the University of education Wikimedia community. We provided the following to support the four communities to take part in the Wikimania celebration.
- Small hardware expenses to support access (such as webcams, microphones, headset/earphones)
- Childcare services to support especially women to take part in Wikimania
- Data packages to distribute to Wikimania participants
- Pre-Wikimania meetups to educate first-time participants on what Wikimania is all about
- Post-Wikimania meetups resulting from having attended Wikimania (food, beverage, meeting space)
- Translation services for Wikimania sessions since our group is language specific.
Outcome

Target outcome | Achieved outcome | Explanation |
Number of Wikimania conference meetups:4 | 4 | This was the second time we celebrated Wikimania involving our other sister communities. All the other communities had their Wikimania celebrations separately and they were all lovely and insightful. Participants socialized, connected, and learned from the experiences shared by their colleagues Wikimedians. |
Data packages provided:40 - 50 | 60 | members from all the communities involved in this project were awarded scholarship packages to support them with data to take part in the event. |
Number of participants granted childcare support:30 | 30 | Breastfeeding mothers were selected from the various communities and supported to take care of their children during the event. |
Number of participants supported with small hardware expeseses:30 | 30 | 30 members from all the communities involved in this project were selected and supported with small hardware. |
Learning
editProjects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
Small hardware expenses to support aided participants to effectively take part in the live sessions and recorded sessions on youtube.
Childcare services support helped especially women with comfort to take part in Wikimania.
Data packages supported participants with enough data to take part in the conference.
Pre-Wikimania meetups educated first-timers on what Wikimania is all about
Post-Wikimania meetups gave participants the opportunity to share with colleagues their experiences and learnings resulting from having attended the conference.
Wikimania sessions were translated into Dagbani, Gurene and Moore on the conference meta page. This would contribute in populating these languages on Wikimedia projects.
- What did not work so well?
We had more that expressed interest in taking part in the event but we could not allow all of them to participate due to our budget.
- What would you do differently next time?
We will create room to onboard more participants in subsequent events of Wikimania.

Anything else
editAnything else you want to share about your project?
Dedicated volunteers were selected and took part in this event. Some of them were far from the hosting venue and we were extremely glad for being able to cater for their travel expenses. We are positive that they will spread the news about our community at their places upon returning home, this will convince more people to volunteer for our community and the movement at large. Participants were so glad on being given the Wikimania customized T-Shirts and this indirectly serves as a free advertisement about the WMF whenever they were them.
