Abstract:
Disinformation is a threat in a digital networked society. Shared knowledge is our power, and the Wikimedia Movement provides several possibilities to produce and share quality and open information. In this session, you can explore how the Capacity Exchange (CapX) can boost your personal and community skills through peer learning. CapX enables the real-time mapping of human and knowledge resources within the Wikimedia Movement, with a focus on peer connection and exchange. After a short video, Sandra Soster will present ways Wikibrarians can benefit from the platform by accessing a pool of available resources, connecting with other people, and sharing expertise. For instance, the librarian agency's role in combating disinformation can take different forms around the world. Connecting with a peer and learning more about their approach or outcomes is important when one is planning to enhance their work. CapX provides a continuous space for such an exchange.
The Capacity Exchange was born from an international collaboration focused on community capacity building. In 2021, a group of Wikimedians recognized the need to move from a deficit-based model (fixing the lack of capacity) to an asset-based approach (leveraging strengths). This shift led to the creation of a platform where Wikimedians can curate profiles based on the skills they have and the knowledge they seek, enabling meaningful connections to exchange skills and services between peers. Launched in 2024, the CapX prototype is now open for community testing and feedback.
