Abstract:
In an era where disinformation increasingly undermines scholarly and public trust in information, the ability to trace and correct falsehoods is critical. This session introduces Citation Genealogy Analysis (CGA), a novel method that leverages network analysis to track the origins and spread of contested information within academic literature and digital platforms. Using a case study from art history, I will demonstrate how CGA can uncover the genealogy of a widely debated iconological theory and reveal how uncritical citation practices contribute to the persistence of misinformation.

This session will specifically relate to the conference theme by addressing the role that librarians, Wikimedians, and information professionals can play in identifying, analyzing, and counteracting disinformation in academic and digital domains. Attendees will gain insights into how CGA can serve as a powerful tool for enhancing source criticism, improving citation practices, and safeguarding the accuracy of information on platforms like Wikipedia.

Participants will leave with actionable strategies for applying CGA in their own fields, empowering them to contribute to the broader effort of maintaining the integrity of information in both scholarly and public discourse. The session will also offer potential outcomes such as fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and developing new tools for network-based analysis of information dissemination.

Takeaways:

- A comprehensive understanding of Citation Genealogy Analysis and its applications.

- Practical insights into combating disinformation through enhanced source criticism and network analysis.

- Strategies for implementing CGA to improve information accuracy on digital platforms like Wikimedia.
