Abstract:
As custodians of human knowledge, libraries and librarians have the utmost responsibility to legally unlock and share this knowledge via the linked open data web, to ensure equitable distribution. In 2025 and beyond, with the continuous innovation in machine learning and artificial intelligence, if libraries continue to keep their open collections behind physical shelves and locked doors, then opinions, feelings and value judgments of the human psyche that dominate mainstream channels will be perceived as facts, and misinformation and disinformation will prevail.
Hence, data partnerships with libraries play an important role in the fight against disinformation. The Wikimedia Deutschland’s Data Partnerships team’s main role is to reach out to various global institutions, e.g. libraries, and raise awareness and develop their technical capacity in using Wikidata and Wikibase to counter disinformation.
In this lecture, I will share the importance of data partnership activities with library institutions, and how libraries can use Wikidata and Wikibase to counter disinformation. Everyone is welcome to join.
