Abstract:
Disinformation impacts the entire information ecosystem, from local newspapers to radio, social media, and sites like Wikipedia. Addressing disinformation therefore involves multiple players, each of whom bring unique perspectives and approaches.
With 15 billion views monthly, Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects are essential platforms for providing free and neutral information, including during major events such as elections, pandemics, or climate crises. Even within the Wikimedia universe there are manifold actors who work together to ensure information is reliable and neutral. Community editors play a crucial role in governance and content moderation, while the WMF supports communities' response to elections with efforts to mitigate disinformation campaigns, and connecting with other stakeholders to protect communities.
This panel session aims to stocktake the joint effort both within the Wikimedia universe and outside of it, to examine how actors from across the information ecosystem work together to understand and address disinformation and why the multi stakeholder approach is essential to face disinformation. Speakers from the Wikimedia movement, government, civil society, multilateral organizations, and academia will discuss the disinformation landscape across the region, highlight pressing threats, and showcase successful collaborations that represent actionable pathways to strengthen anti-disinformation work globally and the role that Wikimedians play in these initiatives.
