Abstract:
In today’s digital landscape, the spread of disinformation challenges global trust and reliable information exchange. This session explores how the Wikimedia Movement can be harnessed as a powerful tool for information diplomacy. By empowering individuals as citizen diplomats, the workshop demonstrates how participants can actively contribute to countering disinformation and promoting accurate information through the strategic use of Wikimedia platforms.
The session delves into the concepts of soft power and information diplomacy, illustrating how community-driven efforts within the Wikiverse can influence global narratives, build public trust, and reinforce reliable information exchange. The session will blend a demonstration of case examples, such as Wikipedia’s collaboration with the World Health Organization during the COVID-19 pandemic, with guided hands-on activities. These activities are designed to equip participants with practical strategies for using Wikimedia projects to set agendas, persuade public opinion, promote public diplomacy, and disseminate information—core components of both soft power and effective information diplomacy.
This session aligns with the conference theme by addressing the critical need to combat disinformation through collaborative and community-focused efforts. Attendees will take away actionable methods for leveraging Wikimedia platforms in their professional and community settings, learning how to enhance their roles as citizen diplomats. Potential outcomes include strengthened capacity for engaging in information diplomacy, improved strategies for countering disinformation, and a deeper understanding of how to use Wikimedia projects to foster global trust and influence. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to make meaningful contributions to the fight against disinformation, ensuring that their efforts contribute to a more informed and trustworthy global information environment.F
