Introduction

edit

From May 8th until April 12, Wikimedia Argentina held the contest “La mujer que nunca conociste 2016” to celebrate women’s month. Aimed at improving women’s visibility in Wikipedia and attracting new female editors, Wikimedia Argentina carried out a new edition of this women’s contest in order to improve these two objectives.

History

Wikimedia Argentina has as a strategic lineament to work around the gender gap in Wikipedia and all of Wikimedia projects. Regarding this, during March 2016, Wikimedia Argentina launched the one month contest “La mujer que nunca conociste 2016” with the double objective of improving the number of women’s articles in Wikipedia and attracting new female editors to the encyclopedia. Although editing contests are usual within the movement and women’s projects are increasing, this contest, “La mujer que nunca conociste”, is the most important proposal regionally and it is an example of the net like work we develop in Wikimedia Argentina.
In line with these premises, the news when implementing the contest during 2016 were as follows:

  1. Net working: the contest “La mujer que nunca conociste 2016” is launched, developed, supported and evaluated by Wikimedia Argentina. Likewise, from Wikimedia Argentina, we promote net-working as a necessary articulator to achieve more and better outcomes and to favor the creation of a more inclusive movement. In this sense, we work so that the Iberocoop network and all of its organizations are represented in the scope of the proposal. This year, we came together with new organizations in the movement. Wikimujeres as well as Wikimedia Mexico, were our allies and both of them were already carrying out great work regarding gender issues.
  1. Establishing new rules for editing: for the first time, the editing contest had clear rules about quality when editing with a gender perspective. In this sense, we were judging for the first time not only the number of articles created but also how these articles had been created. During 2015, Wikimedia Argentina set a series of simple rules about editing with a gender perspective. These rules turned into a learning pattern and the articles were then evaluated according to the rules; rules that were considered essential to improve Wikipedia’s content on women through a gender perspective.
  1. Dissemination: Twitter was our biggest ally. During the month the contest took place, Wikimedia Argentina, together with the rest of the organizations that supported us, used the hashtag #lamujerquenuncaconociste. Currently, the concept is still being used by different groups, when we want to position the lack of content and the few female editors within the public agenda.
  1. Female volunteers’ net: the contest was promoted and supported mainly due to the work of 6 female volunteer editors from Wikimedia Argentina, Wikimujeres and Wikimedia Mexico. Currently, the same net of women volunteers is organizing new projects, working together and articulating strategies to keep strengthening women’s work within the Wikimedia movement.

The contest had a higher rate of participation than in 2015. Due to the fact that the translation tool worked correctly in Spanish, we encouraged participants to create articles from scratch or to translate articles from any other language in Wikipedia.
Outcomes were as follows:
