Several events promoting Greek User Group's activities
- Event 1
- Conference submission and presentation
- Date of the Event: October 18-20, 2024
At the 10th International Conference on Educational Innovation Promotion (Larissa, Greece), we presented a study titled "Ethics and the Use of Wikipedia in Education: Challenges and Opportunities". This work examines educators' perspectives on the use of Wikipedia as a teaching tool. Based on a survey conducted among 400 educators, the findings highlight critical issues such as inaccuracies, plagiarism, and educators' opinions on contributing content to Wikipedia themselves.
Our event was streamed live and our presentation was also uploaded on YouTube. According to the organisers, more than 800 Greek educators attended the conference.

Both main events highlighted the importance of integrating digital platforms like Wikipedia into educational and cultural contexts. The exploration of Wikipedia's ethical usage in education revealed that educators recognize its potential as a valuable teaching tool but remain cautious about challenges such as information accuracy and plagiarism. Engaging educators through structured research provided insights into their perceptions and encouraged thoughtful consideration of how Wikipedia can complement traditional teaching methods. A key takeaway was the need for more targeted training to help educators navigate Wikipedia effectively and ethically. The Ionian University initiative emphasized the power of collaboration between academic institutions and external organizations like Wikimedia. Preparing students for the Ionian Wikithon showcased how awareness-building and hands-on activities can foster both technical and ethical skills. The lecture and workshops not only demystified Wikipedia’s structure and community guidelines but also highlighted its value as a collaborative platform. This approach underscored the importance of connecting theoretical knowledge with practical applications, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to open-source projects while cultivating digital literacy and responsible online behavior. It is important to note that thanks to these events, we continue our preparation for Ionian Wikithon which becomes, after 4 years of constant organisation, a regular University event.
The projects effectively engaged their target audiences—educators and students—through tailored approaches. Educators appreciated the structured exploration of Wikipedia’s educational potential, while students found the hands-on approach of the Ionian Wikithon engaging and practical. The partnerships between academic institutions, Wikimedia communities, and funding bodies like the Wikimedia CEE Hub were instrumental in ensuring the projects' success. These collaborations provided resources, expertise, and credibility to the initiatives. We hope that these events will engage more educators and students in Wikimedia events. |
