editWhat is the problem you're trying to solve?
editWikipedia is an Open Educational Resource (OER): it is already largely used by students, teachers and families, it is released with an open license, it provides content related to what pupils study at school and it provides content which goes beyond what they study at school in many languages. Currently, with the Coronavirus pandemic, it is becoming more and more clear how important are Open Educational Resources and among them Wikipedia has a role. We know the educational value of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia projects and OpenStreetMap, but there are still many things we don’t know. We know Wikipedia is already largely used by students, teachers and families for school purposes, but we are not investing energy and resources in checking how our projects respond to their needs. We don't know what they look for and we don’t know what they find when they read articles related to what they study at school. We don’t even know which are the articles related to the main topics they study at school. This is the major problem that the project addresses.

Community. Italian is a national language of Switzerland. It is spoken in Ticino and Grigioni Canton, with an estimated population of 370’000 inhabitants[1] and in general Italian is considered the principal language of around 720’000 people living in Switzerland[2]. Italian is one of the languages of the Swiss educational system and it is studied in Switzerland and abroad. editThis project develops an analysis of Wikipedia as an Open Educational Tool (with a selection of articles and a system to monitor them), it provides a new perspective on the use and relevance of Wikipedia articles at a national level and it builds an infrastructure to support the work of volunteers and Wikimedia CH in improving relevant content and in engaging with stakeholders. Furthermore the project contributes to establishing a replicable system to identify knowledge gaps around the world based on the main topics studied at school.

editWikipedia belongs in education. Education is one main pillar of Wikimedia CH strategy[4]. The project contributes to the Wikimedia CH strategic priorities and to the Wikimedia CH education program.

6th Action: Advocacy and partnerships
In this action are included all partnerships and all actions to facilitate the introduction of the open content and Wikipedia projects in the education. Advocacy The introduction of Open Education in Switzerland is appreciated by cantonal departments and by the Swiss Confederation. In our plan Wikimedia CH would play a more important role in this area but before doing that, we must have more content and material for schools. International collaboration Wikimedia Ch needs to collaborate at the international level because the languages used at the school (German, Italian, French and English) are spoken in several other countries. |
The project produces an overview of the Swiss school system and it focuses with a pilot project on a specific canton and on its system of education. It involves SUPSI (whose department for training and learning - Dipartimento formazione e apprendimento DFA - has the role of training teachers in Ticino Canton). Thought its network and the content it produces, the project contributes to reinforce Wikimedia CH collaborations and links with universities, policy makers and organisations working in the field of education.
Content produced by this project can also facilitate contacts at a national level with the confederation and other canton, as an example of what Wikipedia can provide related to the major topics taught at school. Furthermore the report allows Wikimedia CH to show the effort the organisation is making in reviewing and monitoring content related to the Swiss schools. The project includes specifically a series of focus group to reinforce the local community and the links with stakeholders in the field of education. |
7th Action: Organization
In this action we include everything relates to the organization. Marketing and communication Before proceeding, Wikimedia CH needs material to communicate efficiently with potential partner and with cantonal departments. A website explaining our educational projects is planned. |
The project is connected to the covid pandemic and the role of digital resources for students, teachers and families. A timely focus of Wikimedia CH in this area can be communicated efficiently and can contribute to the image of an organisation committed to respond to the crises with its resources.
Content produced by the project is also an overview of the Swiss school system which can further facilitate the communication of Wikimedia CH educational projects (with a focus on what Wikipedia articles provide which is added to the engagement of Wikimedia CH in supporting the use of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects as an educational tool to learn active online contribution). The use of data visualisation (and information design) in the project and the attention to a graphic design is meant to produce results which are more appealing and more easily communicated. |

Do you have any goals or metrics around participation or content?
editThe project produces data and metrics. It lists and analyzes existing content on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects (specifically Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, Wikiversity and Wikidata), it suggests contributions to improve selected content and it provides indicators to monitor this content through time. In the analysis of content, the project focuses on visualizations, edit history, controversies, number of sources, presence of images, length of the article and length of the summary and template messages (messages which inform about issues related to articles). Those indicators can be easily reviewed through time, to monitor how content related to the Swiss school changes and it is edited by wikipedia contributors.

editThe project is structured to produce a replicable methodology and a specific case study. The case study is about geography and history taught from elementary school to high school in Ticino Canton and their connections with articles of Wikipedia in Italian. This case study is relevant because it is limited it and allows to develop the methodology and develop all the phases of the project in a reasonable time. It focuses on geography and history because they are the thematic area where it is easier to find connections with Wikipedia articles and where content is specific to Switzerland and Ticino. The focus on Wikipedia in Italian benefits of the project “Wikipedia e la scuola italiana” already implemented and supported by Wikimedia Italia. Furthermore the case study about Ticino is relevant because – as stated in the objectives – content related to Ticino on Wikipedia in Italian is very weak and Italian speaking-Switzerland would benefit of an enlargement of its community also thanks to the collaboration with institutions and specific stakeholders (in the case of this projects teachers, students, schools and organisations working in the field of education).

Community engagement
editThe project contributes to community engagement in two specific ways:
Serving the community. The project fosters conditions to encourage editing by volunteers by providing an infrastructural support to the work of volunteers and of the Wikimedia CH chapter. It selects a list of articles relevant for Switzerland and a Canton, it identify articles which have the priority, it uses data to highlight how articles need to be improved and it involves reviewers to identify other needs.

Are you modeling your project off other program's projects? How is your project different or similar to those project?
editA similar project has been implemented in South Africa and Italy and it has received a positive feedback from chapters and the community. In South Africa the project focused on primary school. In Italy it reviewed school topics from primary school to high school. Each experience needs to assess the school system, to adapt to the national situation and to build a national network, but the general working system of the project appears to be efficient and to develop useful results.

Team and Contribution Record
editThe project is promoted by the Laboratory of visual culture at SUPSI University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland.
The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is one of the nine professional universities recognised by the Swiss Confederation and established in 1997 by integrating preexisting specialised schools and public and private research institutes. The departments and the laboratories of the university have several locations mainly in Canton Ticino. SUPSI has Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree courses and develops research in the following areas: environmental sustainability and the utilisation of natural resources; energy sustainability, renewable energies, consumption and production; technologies and sustainability in the manufacturing and services sectors; entrepreneurship, innovation, new forms of work; digital ecosystems, interaction between technology, information, communications and knowledge; health, demographic changes, wellbeing and sustainability; cultural identity and social inclusion; new methods of learning. With the accent on applied research, development and the transfer of knowledge and technology, research projects are supported by European and national agencies or mandated by organisations and institutions. SUPSI also collaborates with private companies, mainly in the technology sector.
In the Department for Environment Constructions and Design, the Laboratory of Visual Culture (LCV) is a space for applied research into the practices and socio-cultural meanings of visual culture and interactive media. In a context of transforming media and technology culture, we study the application, processes and methods of interactive interfaces, products and services to facilitate knowledge transfer, innovation for economic development and to strengthen SME competitiveness. We contextualise cutting-edge emerging practices critically reflecting on the user experiences, behaviours, aesthetics and their impacts. The laboratory implements research and services focusing on communication, interaction design and on tools and technologies to enhance creative works, education, GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) and heritage. LCV has competences in gamification, information design, web and mobile applications, IoT and digital fabrication, digital archives and interactive installations, exhibition design and interior design, heritage preservation, e-learning, citizens science and open licences. More specifically the laboratory has two research areas: “Interaction Design” and “Culture and Territory”. The research area in “Interaction Design” addresses tangible and digital interaction, user experience, emerging technologies to communication strategies and participatory design. The laboratory is active in the fields of gamification and behavioural change especially addressed to sustainability and education; it develops mobile applications with a focus on gameful services based on data tracking and information visualizations to add value to user experiences and products interfaces. The research area in “Culture and Territory” addresses in particular the needs of cultural institutions and public administration, with a focus on preservation of heritage, documenting contemporary cultural productions, enhancing accessibility and developing open practices and collaboration with online communities and online collaborative projects. The Laboratory has a specific and pioneering expertise on open licenses, open data and in cooperate with collaborative open online projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and OpenStreetMap; the laboratory has been studying practices of online communities, it has been developing visualisation tools to monitor and evaluate online content and it has been working with community managers to trigger participation and to involve online communities in improving specific set of content (with a specific attention on diversity and on rebalancing geographic imbalance). The laboratory also develops visual communication projects for public and private bodies on a national and international level and it has a FabLab – fabrication laboratory with a focus on interaction design, physical computing, open design – founded in 2012 which also offers hands-on courses and events to a wider audience to spread the principles and the practices related to maker education and open source hardware development.

We propose in this project to work with a team instead of a one Wikipedian-in-Residence because in this way we can benefit from the specific expertise and specialisation of each member of the team.
Iolanda Pensa (lead)
editIolanda Pensa (1975, Swiss and Italian) is a volunteer of Wikipedia since 2006 (user:iopensa), member of Wikimedia CH and Wikimedia Italia, lead of Wikimania Esino Lario 2016, chair of the international Wikimania committee and active contributor of many Wikimedia projects related to education, GLAMs, information balance and online and offline community interaction. She is senior researcher and head of research in the “Culture and Territory” area at the Laboratory of visual culture of SUPSI University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland and she is consultant for Open Science at SUPSI. Art critic, she holds two Ph.D. titles: in Social anthropology and ethnology at EHESS École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris and in Territorial government and planning at Politecnico di Milano. Her research work is about systems of knowledge production and distribution, Wikipedia and open licenses and the impact of cultural institutions, public art and biennials on territorial development. She conceived the project Wikipedia Primary School and Wikipedia e scuola italiana.
Luca Botturi
editLuca Botturi (1977) holds a PhD in Communication sciences from the University of Lugano. He worked in field and research projects in educational technologies in Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Spain and the United States of America. He is currently Professor in Media in education at the Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana in Locarno. With the NGO seed he is active in international cooperation as well: he gained field experience in Croatia, Macedonia, Ecuador, Mexico and Ghana. Over the last years, Luca led several digital education projects with schools in Northern Italy, engaging pupils, teachers, administrators and parents. Luca lives in Lugano and is a proud father of 6 children. He contributed as instructional designer in the project Wikipedia Primary School.
Giovanni Profeta
editGiovanni Profeta holds a PhD in Design from Politecnico di Milano, where he developed a thesis on user interfaces to access digitised cultural collections within DensityDesign research lab. After obtaining the master in Visual and Multimedia Communication from the University IUAV of Venice, he collaborated on projects about web design and digital publishing in some web and interaction design studios based in Italy. As a researcher, at the Laboratory of Visual Culture of The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) he is carrying out applied research projects, focused on data visualization and interaction design. Since 2013, he is being teaching several courses, including web and interaction design, at the Bachelor SUPSI in Visual Communication. He designed the data visualizations for the project Wikipedia Primary School and for Wikipedia e scuola italiana.
Marta Pucciarelli
editMarta Pucciarelli (1986) is researcher in the "Culture andTterritory" area at the Laboratory of visual culture of SUPSI. She holds a PhD in Communication science and a master degree in Technology-Enhanced Communication for Cultural Heritage at USI, Lugano. Since 2014 she has been working on research and communication projects to improve the accessibility of education and cultural heritage through Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects. She has been involved in the project "Wikipedia Primary School in South Africa" (2014-2017) and coordinated the expert review process of Wikipedia articles related to primary education. Currently she collaborates in research projects related to open data and open maps for cultural heritage and eGovernment.

√ Projects that foster conditions to encourage editing by volunteers (e.g. editor recruitment campaigns). The project fosters conditions to encourage editing by volunteers by providing an infrastructural support to the work of volunteers and of the Wikimedia CH chapter. It selects a list of articles relevant for Switzerland and a Canton, it identify articles which have the priority, it uses data to highlight how articles need to be improved and it involves reviewers to identify other needs.
√ Direct expenses and compensation for creating code, research, or materials that are published and released as free and open-source. Licensing should be compatible with current Wikimedia and MediaWiki practices. This project and all content produced within this project is released under Creative Commons Zero (CC0 for data) and Creative Commons attribution share-alike (CC BY-SA all for texts, reports, images, data visualisations and slides). Also any script and preparatory data is made available.
√ Requests from organizations with proof of non-profit status. SUPSI is an applied university. The project proposed will be developed as an applied research of the research area “Culture and Territory” of the Laboratory of visual culture. The Laboratory of visual culture produces open science and the project is not a service.
√ One project per proposal, up to a year in duration. This is the only project proposed by SUPSI and Iolanda Pensa. The project lasts 10 months.
√ Projects by applicants who (i) agree to the reporting requirements, and (ii) are willing to sign a grant agreement, and (iii) provide the Wikimedia CH with information needed to process their funding. We confirm our agreement to the requirements.
√ Projects by applicants in good community standing. You can review Iolanda Pensa’s edit history as user:iopensa (with around 40’000 edits since 2006 mainly in Wikipedia in Italian and Wikimedia Commons). All the projects and initiatives are documented on her meta page. She is an active member of the community, engaged in supporting balanced and diverse content on the Wikimedia projects and to trigger the enlargement of the community by involving specifically groups who are not currently active.
