What happened in June and July?
editJune 9th: Swiss Archive Day
editMany archives across Switzerland collaborated with Wikipedia and organized events on or around June 9th. In Romandie, the effort led to the creation of a template for quoting archives, which didn't yet exist in French. The template can be found here. High schools pupils were also involved, and learned about sources, sourcing information correctly online, and about adding information to Wikipedia articles. Archivists were very interested in collaborating with Wikipedia to spread more widely the information their archival fonds hold. Photographs of the event can be found on the Swiss archivists association: http://vsa-aas.ch/fr/journee-des-archives-2017/impressionen-archivtag/
Europeana 1914-18
editWikimedia Switzerland participated to the contest of Europeana 1914-18 presenting a portfolio of projects about the World War I. In this page have been assembled material uploaded year by year mainly from the Swiss Federal Archives, from the National Library, from the Archives Cantonales Jurassiennes, from the ETH Library and finally from the Museum of the radio Monte Ceneri.
June 19th-23rd : Eracom workshop
editA class of students of Eracom, a design school in Lausanne, attended a Wikipedia workshop led by their professor. They improved and created content about Swiss graphic designers, and uploaded images to illustrate these articles. Flor introduced them to Wikipedia, explained WMCH's role, and Rama helped them with Commons.
Freiburg Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon on June 25th
editUser Yayahval led an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon during the Contemporary arts festival Belluard Bollwerk in Freiburg. It is the second one she organized, and it led to the creation of 6 articles, while 19 others were edited. The 18 editors were composed of Yayahval's Art+Feminism edit-a-thon crew, festival goers, and the festival's artists in residency.
Contact with the association Tech-Save
editTech-Save is a new foundation based in Freiburg that seeks to save and share technical and technological know-how and methods, in many domains, from flour mills to aeronautics. The head of the foundation approached WMCH in order to prepare a collaboration. A first step will be to teach and encourage the Foundation members to edit Wikipedia to include the techniques they have collected. Their association with former professionals from Ilford should mean bringing new knowledge about photographic know-how, more specifically, about cibachrome, on Wikipedia!
SBB/CFF-workshop in Olten
editOf course, we had expected to discover the latest technology when we visited the SBB control center in Olten on July 15th. But the scenery was much more spectacular. An introduction by an employee of this company first showed us the dimensions that this coordination work required. There must be no mistake and above all no system failure! In various stages, redundant systems are installed, which also multiple failures of different resources do not lead to a total breakdown. From energy supply to building security, electronics, to human workforce, all eventualities that could collapse could only slightly affect train traffic on the Swiss routes.
All participants - except one who had missed the connection to our tour due to the delay of the train to Olten - were then also member in the second part, when the dimensioning of the data exchange, which will be between SBB and Wikidata. SBB provides us with the rich stock of data that is suitable for use in different Wikimedia projects. From a provisional wish list, we are now proceeding to a duty booklet. We will report on the further progress.

Miscellaneous news
edit- Convalescent
After a deep surgical intervention a long term volunteer got his memory back, and would like to restart editing. He writes that he has lost so much of his knowledge as a Wikipedian he needs external help to understand the techniques. If you live in or around Schaffhausen and you feel able to help him on some occasions, please contact to us. We will give you the contact informations.
- Job request
A member of the community is looking for a Wikimedia specialist. If you are interested, please contact us; we will give you their information.
