Activities

edit

Wikimania 2024

edit

Two members of Wikimedia Community Malta attended Wikimania 2024 in Katowice. Aside from participation in various instructive session, they also participated directly in activities and discussions with CEE Hub, of which WCM is a member. As an amazing networking opportunity, the WCM members were also able to discuss progress on plans around the ongoing Malta-Morocco collaboration with members of Wikimedia Community User Group Morocco. New connections with WikiSudItalia were also established during sessions in Katowice; two of their members were invited to be jury members for the 2024 Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments photo contests in Malta. We are keen to develop further collaboration with Malta's geographic neighbors in 2025.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Malta

edit

Following the announcement of the finalists and winners of Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Malta in August, we embarked on Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Malta, which was the 9th edition of this context in Malta.

Here are some basic metrics from our activities with links to statistic tools:

The finalists and winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Malta were awarded at a prize ceremony held during the Malta Book Festival in November, and the top 10 photos were submitted for the international contest.

CEE Meeting 2024

edit

Two members of Wikimedia Community Malta attended CEE Meeting 2024 in Istanbul. Aside from participation in various instructive session, they also gave two presentations during one of the lightning talk session. This was also another networking opportunity, and in this case the focus was on aligning with WikiDonne on the development of Malta's WikiNisa initiative. Malta will also be participating in the evaluation of CEE Youth Group scholarships at the end of 2024.

Maltese Language project

edit

WCM was invited to participate in the Malta Book Festival organised by the National Book Council. This was the third consecutive year that we participated in this national event, organizing an information stand on the convention floor, as well as presenting several information sessions to encourage editing and other contributions to Wikimedia projects.

This activity was also an opportunity to launch three new lines of activity.

  • WikiProject Każini - aims to work with community band clubs in Malta, which are now part on UNESCO's Intangible World Heritage list
  • WikiNisa - focusing on women in Malta and addressing the gender gap on Wikimedia project
  • New Wikipedia Editor Training - in collaboration with the Times of Malta, as part of our WiR arrangement with them

Some metrics for these New Wikipedia Editor Training sessions is available through the Outreach Dashboard.

At the Malta Book Festival, WCM has also agreed to collaborate with the National Book Council in 2025 to develop a Wikimedian in Residence program around Malta's National Book Prize, giving special attention to notable Maltese authors, award winning books, and Malta's book publishing houses.
