COVID-19: Cancel or continue?

edit

Hello Sandaru, Sivakosaran, Azeez, Nandana, Dan arndt. Following comments from the grants team, and considering the worsening situation of the outbreak, can we have a quick vote if to cancel this year's WLE event? Depending on the most votes, we can decide if to call-off the event or continue as planned. As we are the only volunteers, I am keeping this discussion here. Also pinging User:AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) and User:I JethroBT (WMF), if they would like to comment. Rehman 07:45, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • As the lead organiser, I reluctantly vote to cancel this year's WLE. I feel the funds may be mostly wasted as participants may not feel interested in a contest like this amidst the worsening global scenario and panic. Let alone the challenge to even post the certificates to the winners. Of course, I am more than willing to continue volunteering if the majority votes so. Rehman 07:45, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Rehman: it would be a shame to cancel this year's WLE event, particularly as it is all dealt with digitally and therefore there is no direct impact by COVID-19 on the event. I am also conscious that as the COVID-19 coordinator for a large organisation my time/availability for the WLE event may be compromised. In saying that it may be events like these that give people an opportunity to think about something else apart from COVID-19 and its impacts - which is a positive. I would be prepared to continue and to support the event if others are like-minded. Dan arndt (talk) 08:35, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi Rehman and others! The general advice from the international team is to continue organizing the contest as planned, with a focus on online activities. Of course, we will be discouraging travel and offline public events, but we can still encourage people to dig through their archives and, for example, improve Wikipedia articles on nature topics while they are in quarantine. Here's our recent letter with some advice on how to hold Wiki Loves Earth during the pandemic; we will be rolling out more advice soon. That being said, your local community is, of course, free to decide on the fate of WLE in Sri Lanka; if you feel that your time and resources would be spent better on other projects and/or the situation in your specific country makes it hard for people to participate, that is completely understandable. --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 11:56, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ping: Sandaru, Sivakosaran, Azeez, Nandana. Please do share your thoughts. We need all volunteers if we are to do this. Thank you! Rehman 06:26, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think we should go ahead. Because of the current situation of people being self quarantined, it will give them some extra time to volunteer or go through all archives to select photos and submit for the contest. For me the challenge lies in promoting this among all the other COVID-19 related news in the social media channels. --Sandaru (talk) 09:15, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I understand there is a panic environment and some people may not be interested in activities like this. However, since this is an online competition and given that a lot of people may spend more time online these days, I think we should go ahead as planned. Issuing certificates can be delayed until the situation improves. --Sivakosaran (talk) 15:23, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I feel that even though this can be a complete an online event, the publicizing of a a photography competition may not be best for the interest of the general public in this situation. Of course if the majority of us feels we should go ahead, I am completely willing to volunteer. But we might have lower engagement and distributing prizes/certificates might have challanges. Azeez (talk) 02:31, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Alrighty. Seems like we have an overwhelming interest in pushing forward. Let's do this! Rehman 06:24, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Translations

Hello Sivakosaran, Nandana, and Dan arndt. Thank you for volunteering for translations! Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Sri Lanka is now updated with the relevant English text, and ready for translations. If you CTRL+F on the source code, any blank si= (for Sinhala) or ta= (for Tamil) tags means they should be translated from that section's en= tag. Please do message here for any clarifications on questions. Although not urgent nor relevant to WLE, there are also some items to translate on Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka and its subpages - if you are interested. Thank you! :) Rehman 06:25, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

PR media

edit

Hello Azeez. Thanks for volunteering! As last time, would you be able to update this file as follows please:

  • Remove "Wikimedia Merchandise" line.
  • Change to "Wikimania 2021"

This should do for now. We could probably recolour and reuse something from Category:Wiki Loves Earth in Sri Lanka for the social media posts... What do you think? Rehman 06:29, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Judging

edit

Hi Sandaru, Sivakosaran, Azeez, Nandana, Dan arndt. My apologies for the delay in updating, I've been quite busy in RL. I'm now creating the WLX project, and as last time, Azeez and myself will do a quick run through the bulk of the ~5,700 uploads to remove obviously out of scope images which has no chance of passing (including very bad quality ones). Once that is done, I'll create the main judging (i.e. round 2), and distribute the ~5,000 files among the 6 of us, and will proceed there onwards. Stay tuned. Cheers, Rehman 08:43, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jury accounts created. All of you should receive an email with the credentials. Do note the "+wle2020" suffix to your emails. You'd need to add them when signing in. More updates to follow. Thanks! Rehman 09:52, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Two things; My jury account email was in the spam. So if any other members of the jury didn't receive the email, check the spam folder. The other thing is when I log in I get the message "No round configured yet. Please wait until contest admin configures the tool.". Is that expected?--Sandaru (talk) 19:31, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Rehman I haven't received an email yet regarding the judging. Will keep checking. Dan arndt (talk) 02:00, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sandaru, Dan arndt, you're right, those mails does go to spam. I should've mentioned. The error after login is expected. I will update again. Cheers, Rehman 07:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can you resend as I haven't received anything yet - even checked through all my spam. Dan arndt (talk) 09:56, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Dan. Sent you an on-wiki email just now. Rehman 04:02, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Rehman can you please resend my account credentials again. It probably went to spam and my spam gets deleted after a month. Thanks a lot NandanaM (talk) 14:16, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nandana. Sending you an email now. Cheers, Rehman 03:10, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
