Wikisource is an online digital library of free-content textual sources on a wiki, operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikisource is the name of the project as a whole and the name for each instance of that project (each instance usually representing a different language); multiple Wikisources make up the overall project of Wikisource. The project's aim is to host all forms of free text, in many languages, and translations.

Under the GLAM project, the Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda will organise an Introduction to WikiSource for Luganda language editors on Saturday 09 March 2024. This is in commemoration of the World Indegenous Languages day .Though it is a one day in-person event, we will continue engaging the them up 28 March 2024 through a proofread-a-thon for Luganda texts.

Objectives

The objective of the event is :

  1. Recruit and introduce Luganda language editors to Wikisource and its basics;
  2. Chart plans for future engagement(s) with the Luganda language in Wikisource ;
  3. Expand the range of activities within GLAM ;
  4. Translate the Wikisource editing guide into Luganda;

Contributions (pages proofread and validated) from editors will be tracked through the Wikisource contest board.

Achievements

  1. Atleast 10 Luganda language editors were introduced to Wikisource as a Wikimedia project.
  2. We were able to import Luganda language texts from the Internet Archive to Wikimedia Commons (see an example here)

Challenges

  1. We were not to transclude Luganda language texts obtained from the Internet Archive to the Luganda Wikisource index.
  2. There's scarcity of Luganda language texts available in the public domain.
  3. Deletion of uploaded texts from Wikimedia Commons because of a contestation of the public domain licence and copyright (see example 1 here and example 2 here)
  4. Deletion of our proof-read and validated work from Wikisource because the public domain license was contested in Wikimedia Commons.

Learning points & opportunities

  1. Adequate set-up of the Luganda Wikisource index will be needed : It will be a challenge to continue with this project if the index page is not set up as we had to edit Luganda using the English Wikisource. This will require intensive support from the Wikisource team ;
  2. It is an opportunity to request for more high level support and education from the Wikimedia Foundation in relation to the intricacies of Wikisource
  3. Opportunities to learn more about creative commons licences and how they are applied in platforms out of Wikimedia projects.
