Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda/Wiki For Refugees 2022

The #WikiForRefugees Editathon Sprint is an initiative of Platform Africa and the Wikimedia Community User Group in Uganda aimed at gathering diverse stakeholders from Refugee Settlements in Uganda to co-create and collectively improve information about Refugee Settlements on Wikipedia, the world’s largest collaborative knowledge base. This program will be divided into three parts as follows:

  • Intensive training: Introducing the participants to key skills and tools on how to update/ edit and add articles to Wikipedia for participants of the event.
  • Edit-a-thon - Dedicating the second day of the program to improving stub articles and creating new entries about critical topics, underrepresented groups, initiatives and putting up-to-date figures about refugees, etc.
  • Creating content for upload on Wikimedia Commons including videos, audios, and videos to document the life of refugees in Uganda.

EdTech Monday Uganda: Using technology to drive learning among displaced youth

On May 31, 2022, Sandra Aceng was hosted on EdTech Monday Uganda under the topic of using technology to drive learning among displaced youth to share the usergroup's work on Wikipedia For Refugees. This was aimed at marking the World Refugee Day, the theme this year being “Right to Asylum” moderated by Raymond Mujuni. The show was aired on Monday 30th May 2022 on UBC TV and NTV Uganda at 19:30hrs and 18:30hrs respectively.

Open Source for Equality

On July 6th, 2022, the usergroup was invited for Open Source for Equality event at Fairway Hotel, Kampala to share the work by Refugees on Wikimedia including the usergroup mandate, founder, reach of work, contribution to the SDGs; how we are using open-source; and the challenges and opportunities that using open-source has given the usergroup. This was aimed at promoting dialogue on how open-source digital innovations can contribute to the SDGs (with a focus on health, education and equality) and to encourage increased collaborations between Ugandan digital solution-developers and development/humanitarian practitioners. Online Training

On the 4th February and 11th February, 2023, the Wikimedia Uganda in partnership with Platform Africa held a refresher training for Rhino Refugee Settlement, Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement, Imvepi Refugee Settlement, and Nakivaale Refugee Settlement.

On the 4th February, we covered Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. On the 11th February, introduction to Wikipedia and article translation.
