Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2017/Movement strategy session/Preliminary notes

Wikimedia’s strategic direction: How can we move towards knowledge equity?

edit

Earlier in 2017, the movement strategy work started with asking "What do we want to build or achieve together over the next 15 years?" What emerged from this process that involved thousands of Wikimedians is the strategic direction: Service and equity. At the Wikimedia Diversity Conference, participants are asked to interpret the strategic direction in the different contexts of diversity. They will have the opportunity to develop and exchange ideas about how they want to move forward towards knowledge equity. This session will also offer the space to start exploring how roles, responsibilities and resources can be shared across the movement.

We are starting initial discussions at the conference for phase 2 of the movement strategy. The conference is an ideal space for the strategy team to gather input for refining the design of the next phase.

The strategy work will take place on Saturday afternoon in a big group dialogue we are calling “The WikiCafé”.

Preparations

edit

Please come prepared to this session: Have a look at the strategic direction and think about it in the context of diversity. Can this direction help us to become a move diverse movement? And if yes, how can it direct us there?

Our strategic direction: Service and Equity

edit

By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us.

We, the Wikimedia contributors, communities and organizations, will advance our world by collecting knowledge that fully represents human diversity, and by building the services and structures that enable others to do the same.

We will carry on our mission of developing content as we have done in the past, and we will go further.

Knowledge as a service: To serve our users, we will become a platform that serves open knowledge to the world across interfaces and communities. We will build tools for allies and partners to organize and exchange free knowledge beyond Wikimedia. Our infrastructure will enable us and others to collect and use different forms of free, trusted knowledge.

Knowledge equity: As a social movement, we will focus our efforts on the knowledge and communities that have been left out by structures of power and privilege. We will welcome people from every background to build strong and diverse communities. We will break down the social, political, and technical barriers preventing people from accessing and contributing to free knowledge.

For additional context, you can also read the reasoning paragraphs on the direction page, as well as have a look at the previous conversations around the themes of “healthy, inclusive communities” and “a truly global movement”.
