Unappropriate username
My account was blocked at Wikimedia Commons because of the unappropriate username. My username means Pereslavl museum-preserve, because I work with Commons for my job duties (like a wikimedian in residence). This means, I publish the media files and news articles not with my personal name but with the name of my employer.
The reason of this blocking is explained on the Commons policy page. From my point of view, the username does not advertise or promote any company. It is not disruptive and does not contain any personal attack. It is not linked to Wikimedia authority (like administrator or bureaucrat or steward). It is not offensive. Moreover, it stays in line with other museum accounts (commons:User:Kosmo-museum, commons:User:Guggenheim Museum, commons:User:RMR Museum, commons:User:Museum für Kommunikation, Bern, commons:User:BrooklynMuseum, commons:User:History Museum Plovdiv, commons:User:Finnish Museum of Photography, commons:User:University Museum Utrecht, commons:User:SourisValleyMuseum, et cetera.)
Is it possible to unblock my account at Commons? What have I to do for this? Thank you for any help with this issue. --Переславский музей-заповедник (talk) 22:44, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
- You should post an unblock request at your talk page at Wikimedia Commons. There's a template to request an unblock. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 22:47, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

- @Justicinwiki: For the most part content related material in each project (such as the English Wikipedia you referenced above) is managed by contributors to that project. You are on the meta-wiki right now, where we coordinate things between or for multiple projects. Do you have a specific example of a multiple project issue that you can identify? Automatical global user registrations
Hello, I don't know really where to write this message. I'm asking why someone or something is making many user registrations on other wikis. This think happened in 12-14 december 2017 and 9-10 february 2018. If you look in "Attached on" in Sort ascending.[1] It did everything itself not by me but who or what is doing this??? I don't want this. That think it doesn't just happened to me but also some users i know. --S4b1nuz E.656 (talk) 08:39, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, it could be phab:T181731 (at least the December registrations), but more likely it’s phab:T186945. People are working on this bug :-/ Regards --Schniggendiller (talk) 11:31, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- Indeed, there seems a design error in the recent software changes, which cannot be prevented from turning "fake" recentchanges rows into loud noise (phabricator:T181731#3877495). --Nemo 12:04, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- Interesting, did not know that.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:15, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- No, there's no design error. Your complaint in phab:T181731#3877495 is just based on mistaken assumptions, as was pointed out to you in phab:T181731#3878330. BJorsch (WMF) (talk) 15:26, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

- Currently, MediaWiki stores the full username as part of each revision, log entry, recentchange entry, and so on. This wastes space to the point that it impedes database maintenance, and also makes renames difficult. Further, it leads to strange issues when it records a username that doesn't exist locally and then that username is created. So we're changing the way they're stored. And part of doing so is making sure that usernames that don't exist locally are never recorded: either they need to be recorded in a new "interwiki" format or the local account has to be created for the SUL account.
- A maintenance script to clean up those "username that doesn't exist locally" records from past imports and such was run in December, which is your first batch of creations. After running it, it was found that the Wikibase software was still adding recentchange entries with such usernames (T183019). After fixing that, the script was run again a few days ago to clean up the Wikidata recentchanges that had been added, which is your second batch of creations. There aren't any plans to run the script again, although it may be needed if we find something else is still adding such records.

Consider renaming URL of closed Wikipedia 10th anniversary site?
Well, because iso639-3:ten is Tama in Colombia, while it's an extinct language, there would also in theory have interest people that want to contribute a test wiki in this language editon, but like the existing Norman Wikipedia case, this memorial site also blocks creation of Colombia Tama contents, so shouldn't this be e.g. https://ten.wikimedia.org ? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:13, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- I don't especially disagree, though I wonder if it's remotely worth the effort. Do we know if that language was ever even a written language? I think for now the thing to do is for me to post a notice on that page similar to the one currently at incubator:Wp/nrm, and if anyone ever actually comes to us looking to create a test we'll worry about it then. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:10, 15 February 2018 (UTC)
- I'll add: Unlike in the case of nrm, where creating and editing pages in Incubator using the prefix "Wp/nrm" is blocked, it is possible to create pages with the prefix "Wp/ten". So this question is not really a problem until and unless someone creates a test in Incubator and otherwise gets it fully ready for approval. StevenJ81 (talk) 17:21, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

- If you want to use this on a single project, that project can override this list with a whitelist entry - this is normally the best solution. Optionally, you can start a discussion here: Talk:Spam_blacklist#Proposed_removals. — xaosflux Talk 16:07, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

How to make the "Timeless" skin my global skin?
Not only does it look nice, IMO, but I can edit Wikimedia freely without someone asking me "you edit Wikipedia?!". Can someone tell me what I should put in my "global.css" in order to put this skin on every wiki I go on? --Atcovi (Talk - Contribs) 23:55, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Visit Special:CentralAuth/Atcovi and change it everywhere by hand. mw:Extension:GlobalPreferences is to be rolled out early this year by the end of March 2018 (progress). Gryllida 23:59, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- By the way, I may encourage you to query your wikis and suggest them to switch to Timeless skin by default if you think this would benefit their work. If consensus is reached, Wikimedia may action the configuration change. --Gryllida 00:01, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
- As said above there is no such thing as global preferences at this time. With regard to default, Wikimedia will not be making this the default at a wiki at this point in time, it is in beta and constant development and still under evaluation. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:44, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

New user preference to let users restrict emails from brand new accounts
Hello,
The WMF's Anti-Harassment Tools team introduced a user preference which allows users to restrict which user groups can send them emails. This feature aims to equip individual users with a tool to curb harassment they may be experiencing.
- In the 'Email options' of the 'User profile' tab of Special:Preferences, there is a new tickbox preference with the option to turn off receiving emails from brand-new accounts.
- For the initial release, the default for new accounts (when their email address is confirmed) is ticked (on) to receive emails from brand new users.
- Case user: * A malicious user is repeatedly creating new socks to send Apples harassing emails. Instead of disabling all emails (which blocks Apples from potentially receiving useful emails), Apples can restrict brand new accounts from contacting them.
The feature to restrict emails on wikis where a user had never edited (phab:T178842) was also released the first week of 2018 but was reverted the third week of 2018 after some corner-case uses were discovered. There are no plans to bring it back at any time in the future.
We invite you to discuss the feature, report any bugs, and propose any functionality changes on the talk page.

Social organizing
Since 2016 I'm using Part-up (www.part-up.com) to find talents for the projects I'm working on. What I don't like about Part-up is that you have to pay money to start a tribe. Hopefully Colony (colony.io) will have another business model. But I was wondering. Would this social organizing domain a direction for Wikimedia to explore? I would like to start a dialogue about this. What possible next steps good I take? Regards, Timboliu (talk) 09:48, 16 February 2018 (UTC)
Help the Anti--Harassment Tools team pick 2 Blocking tools to build
Hello everybody! Over the past weeks the Community health initiative team took a look at at all 58 suggestions that came out of the discussion about making improvements to blocking tools. Now join the discussion to select 2 to build from the shortlist.
