Malayalam is a Dravidian language. It has about 35 million native speakers mostly from Kerala and Lakshadweep. Outside India, there is a sizeable Malayalam speaking population in the Gulf Countries, United States etc.

Current status of the Malayalam wiki projects

Malayalam Wikipedia is the most active Malayalam wiki project. Malayalam wikipedia has 13,500 articles as of 2010 July. Wikisource and Wiktionary are also active to some extent. But Wikibooks and Wikiquote are not active. Recently there are some initiative from the wiki community to make the Wikibooks and Wikiquotes active.

Malayalam Wikipedian Santhosh Thottingal has developed a software (Wiki2CD) for the creation of the Malayalam Wikipedia CD since the existing softwares doesn’t support indic language scripts. Now you can create Wikipedia CD of any language (including all Indian languages) using Wiki2CD.

Recent advocacy programs

  1. Malayalam WikiMedians have organized a wiki meetup at Ernakulam on 2010 April 17. 40active Malayalam WikiMedians and 40 newcomers have attended this meetup. Following are some of the outcome of this meetup.
    • A CD that contains 500 selected articles from Malayalam Wikipedia was released. The ISO image of the CD is avilaable for download here <<<<>>>
    • A booklet that contained FAQs about Malayalam wiki projects was also released. The booklet is available for download here.
    • A website of the Malayalam wiki community was launched. It is available here:
  2. Malayalam WikiMedians have conducted Wiki academies in Bangalore and Palakkad.
