Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc./Movement Strategy Recommendation & Prioritization/Report
On the 17th of November 2020, the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation reviewed the Movement Strategy Recommendations shared by the Movement Strategy Team to determine what aspect of the recommendations that should be prioritized. Over 30 members of our community participated in the strategic discussion to provide feedback on the recommendations based on the need of the Nigeria Community.
We have documented below the insights and feedback from participants of the discussions and the aspect of the recommendations that our community is proposing for prioritization.
How we connected
editMembers of the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc. were informed via our communication channels on the need to review the Movement Strategy Recommendations. The recommendations were summarized and shared with them prior to the general meeting date (17th November 2020). The summarized recommendations were translated into the three major languages spoken in Nigeria; Yoruba, Hausa & Igbo languages. Participants were allowed to reviewed the recommendations for at least 5 days prior to the meeting. The meeting took place online on Zoom and streamed live on Facebook.
Who participated
editThe strategic discussion was led by Kayode Yusuf, and Olaniyan Olushola and attended by the Foundation's executive director, Ms. Omolayo Ogunsiji, board members of the Foundation and other executive members including head of the Wikimedia Nigeria Fan Clubs & Wikimedia Hubs in Nigeria. Members of the Strategy core team, including Mehrdad Pourzaki, and Abbad Diraneyya participated.
In total, over 30 members of our community participated in the strategic discussion with representation from the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, Igbo Wikimedians User Group, Hausa Wikimedians User Group.
What was discussed
editOur discussions primarily focus on the review of the 10 recommendations and what should be prioritized. Several questions were raised around how these recommendations would be implemented. Mehrdad Pourzaki, and Abbad Diraneyya responded to some of the questions raised on implementations with input from some members of the working groups including Olaniyan Olushola Isaac Olatunde and Sam Oyeyele.
Improvement of user experience, Investment in skills and leadership development recommendations were central to the discussion and many participants suggested that resources should be committed to improving skills and leadership and a way to improve user experience be designed.
In other to capture all recommendation and input from community members, a survey was shared with the community on what should be prioritized. A total of 42 members of the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc. reported their "priority" recommendation for the movement strategy.
As shown in the infographics below, 4 priority recommendations were selected by over 53% of reporting members. The two most popular recommendations noted as a priority by at least 75% of participating members of the community were to improve user experience, invest in skills and leadership development. Over 50% of participating members stated that increase in sustainability of our movement and identification of topics for impact should be prioritized.
