Program focus #1

Assumptions

Given the evolving status of the movement charter in April 2024, the Wikimedia Summit organizers are working on the design of the event under the following assumptions:

• There will be a full draft of the movement charter to engage with by April 2024.
• If there isn’t, there will be content of the charter drafts to engage with.
• There may not be a process or clarity on establishing a global council yet.

Purpose 1

Bringing people together to make significant progress on the design of the future Wikimedia governance.

Desired Outcomes:

The Summit provides the environment for achieving the following outcomes:

• Participants engage with the content of the Movement Charter and share their input on the content of the Charter.
• Participants understand the implications and expectations that the proposed governance model(s) would have on their work, their organization and the movement.
• Participants have a clear understanding of how the Movement Charter could come into effect. They understand the expectations and/or implications regarding their participation in voting and ratification.

Program focus #2

Assumptions

• For the future, there may be more equitable and participatory ways to design and organize an annual affiliate gathering – in line with principles and recommendations of Movement Strategy.
• Defining the purpose and scope of future affiliate gatherings will depend on the content of the Movement Charter, particularly the roles and responsibilities of the Global Council and the affiliates.
• Designing the future events that will replace the Wikimedia Summit will take time and require a transition period. Therefore, we don’t expect the next event to happen before 2026.

Purpose 2

Discussing the future of global affiliate gatherings, because Wikimedia Summit 2024 will be the last of its kind.

Desired Outcomes:

The Summit provides the environment for achieving the following outcomes:

• Participants have responded to and received the data from the survey on the needs and purposes for future affiliate gatherings.
• Participants discuss the purpose of future affiliate gatherings.
• A group of affiliates make a commitment to designing a new concept for future affiliate gatherings.
