Wikimedia at the 20th ICOM-CC Triennial Conference
Help us share museums' knowledge with communities everywhere
editFor several years, Wikimedia affiliates have supported ICOM through an International Museum Day campaign to document museums. There have also been collaborations to illustrate and disseminate Red Lists to protect cultural heritage in Afghanistan and Southeast Europe. We believe that ICOM's new definition of museum,[1] which highlights the importance of inclusivity and community participation, is an opportunity to promote further collaboration.
“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”
— ICOM, August 2022
To this end, Wikimedia Germany, Wikimedia Italy, Wikimedia Portugal, Wikimedia Spain, Wikimedia Sweden, Wikimedia Switzerland, Amical Wikimedia, and the Wikimedia Foundation, are all participating in the 20th Triennial ICOM-CC Conference. The city of Valencia, the third largest city in Spain, and European Green Capital 2024, will host this meeting at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).
